Recorded at Hundred Years Gallery, in Hoxton, London, March 29th, 2014 by Constantine Dinos Michaelides.
"BEFOREHAND formed exclusively for the an appearance at the launch concert for Angharad Davies' 'Six Studies' release on Confront. That debut concert performance was recorded and, following a long standing ritual at Confront, was subsequently released for public consumption and critique.
No rehearsal beforehand(!), straight into the music. Dimitra played with one functioning arm, the other strapped up due to a broken elbow. Mark played his electronics set-up, last used at a show with Keith Rowe in Dublin in 2006. Eight years in a case never touched.
Potential to fail? Possibly. Did it?"-Confront
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Dimitra Lazaridou Chatzigoga "Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga (b. 1981, Thessaloniki, Greece) is a musician and a linguist based in London. She is active in experimental and improvised music since 2006. She plays the zither, a string instrument, and uses ebows and objects on its resonance box to produce sustained or granulated sounds. Her approach focuses on the interplay between spontaneity and elaborate techniques. She has performed solo, in long-term collaborations or in occasional formations with Jennifer Allum, Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Angharad Davies, Rhodri Davies, Matt Davis, Axel Dörner, Phil Durrant, Ferran Fages, Anastasis Grivas, Franz Hautzinger, Robin Hayward, Chris Heenan, Ute Kanngieser, Grundik Kasyansky, Martin Küchen, Tisha Mukarji, Ivan Palacký, Eddie Prévost, Henrik Olsson, Christine Sehnaoui, Birgit Ulher and Daichi Yoshikawa among others. Her first solo album 'stroke by stroke' was released in 2011 on Organized Music from Thessaloniki. Recently, she released 'Workshop concert' on Matchless Recordings with Jennifer Allum, Ute Kanngieser, Grundik Kasyansky, Eddie Prévost and Daichi Yoshikawa and 'Accidents of matter or of Space' on suppedaneum that includes realizations of Sarah Hughes' composition (can never exceed unity) performed with Rhodri Davies, Patrick Farmer, Jane Dickson and Neil Davidson. In the last few months, she performed with Grundik Kasyansky and Daichi Yoshikawa at the OTO Project Space, with Phil Durrant at GVart and she toured in Sweden with Angharad Davies, Axel Dörner and Henrik Olsson." ^ Hide Bio for Dimitra Lazaridou Chatzigoga • Show Bio for Mark Wastell "Mark Wastell Born 1968; cello. Much of Mark Wastell's relationship with his chosen instrument is concentrated on the tactile, textural and sonic possibilities of both violoncello and bow. He is increasingly interested in working with extreme elements drawn from frequency, timbre and pitch. His early activity was consciously and subconsciously influenced by a variety of improvising musicians including John Stevens, Barry Guy, Phil Durrant and John Russell. Subsequent exposure to contemporary composers lead to a greater understanding and appreciation of the works written for strings by Feldman, Cage, Nono, Lachenmann and Sciarrino. The use of live electronics and music concrete by Tudor, Parmegiani, Xenakis and others was another important early influence. Wastell's current instrumental material primarily focuses on using abstract principles of space and texture - encompassing elements of new London silence, pro-instrument minimalism, new complexity and electro-acoustics. Because of the very nature of his chosen instrument, he tends to favour 'chamber' style ensembles and is a member of a number of regular groups: Mark Wastell has also performed with many other leading musicians including John Zorn, Keith Rowe, Peter Kowald, Hugh Davies, Roger Turner, Veryan Weston, Lol Coxhill, Mark Sanders, Axel Dorner, Hans Koch, Phil Minton, Max Eastley and Steve Beresford. As a soloist he has played at the Micro-classical Festival (London 1996), LMC Festival (London 2000) and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (2000). He has travelled extensively with various groups, performing on tour and at festivals in the USA, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Greece. Other work includes the launch in 1996 of his own record label, Confront Recordings. Wastell is also joint co-ordinator of the concert venue All Angels, together with Rhodri Davies." ^ Hide Bio for Mark Wastell
