Artist Biographies

"Angélica Vázquez is a harp player from Spain currently based in Oporto, Portugal. She studied with Maria Rosa Calvo-Manzano (Spain), Carrol McLaughlin (United States) and Ernestine Stoop (Holland). She performs in experimental music, new music and live improvisation. As a soloist she has performed in US and in Europe, working with composers like Takayuki Rai, Anne La Berge, Kaffe Matthews, Guus Janssen, Kate Moore or Joseph Waters and Improvisers like Butch Morris, Evan Parker, Han Bennink or Steve Hubback . She has performed with symphony orchestras like ¨Filarmonía¨ Symphony Orchestra, Radio Television Symphony Orchestra from Spain, Arizona University Symphony Orchestra, Casa da Música Symphony Orchestra from Porto and contemporary music ensembles like Insomnio (Utrech), Modelo 62 (The Hague), BrokkenFabriek (Amsterdão), RPM Electro Travelling Band (The Hague), DAMU collective (The Hague) and Remix (Porto). She holds a Bachelor from the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, a Master on contemporary harp and a ¨NAIP Music Master for New audiences and Innovative Practice¨ from The Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Currently she works as a harp professor at the Porto Conservatory of Music, is part of FMFX collective, Vertixe Sonora Ensemble, Pedra Contida and collaborates with Eventless Plot (Thessaloniki), Nova Orquesta Futurista do Porto, Kulter (Amsterdam), Jazz ao Centro (Coimbra), Eureka Discos (Córdoba), Cronica label (Oporto) and Sonoscopia (Porto)."

"Miguel Carvalhais is a designer and musician.

He's an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, where he is associated with INESC TEC.

He collaborates with Pedro Tudela in the @c project since 2000, working often with LIA in audiovisual performances or installations. In 2003 they started the Cr—nica label where weÕve been releasing experimental and electronic music.

He completed his PhD thesis in early 2011. Following that, he published the book Artificial Aesthetics: Creative Practices in Computational Art and Design in 2016.

He helped to organize the xCoAx conference on Computation, Communication, Aesthetics and X, with editions in Bergamo, Porto, Glasgow, and Bergamo so far, and an upcoming edition in Lisboa. He also helped to organize the Invisible Places symposium and Inter-Face."

"Studied alto saxophone within a jazz tradition spectrum. His continuous solo experimental research explores a wide scope of sound material through the use of the extended technics. Participates in several ensembles of improvisational music, electro acoustics and reductionism. Collaborates with musicians such as, Ernesto Rodrigues, Ricardo Jacinto, Sei Miguel, Fala Mariam, João Castro Pinto, Rafael Toral, Manuel Mota, David Stackenäs, Travassos, Paulo Raposo, Carlos Santos, Shiori Usui, C. "Marcelo dos Reis born 1984, Lisbon. He is one active voice in the Portuguese creative music scene, with performances in and out of Portugal.

After studying music he decided to get into the improvised and experimental music using the nylon string guitar as main vehicle of expression.

In this field he had the opportunity of play and work with : Elliott Sharp, Burton Greene, Burkhard Beins, Manuel Mota, Liz Allbee, Evan Parker, Klára Doležálková, Carlos "Zíngaro", Toshimaru Nakamura, Andrea Neumann, Théo Ceccaldi, Werner Dafeldecker, Kátia Sá, Angélica Salvi amongst many others.

He is member of OPEN FIELD string trio, The NAP, FAIL BETTER!, FRAME trio, leads the group PEDRA CONTIDA and works in duo with Angélica V. Salvi.

In addition to making music, Marcelo is one of the organisers of the Double Bill concert series, he collaborates with the jazz.pt magazine and he is also member of the Jazz ao Centro Association. Recently created with José Miguel Pereira the record label CIPSELA."

"João Pais Filipe (born 1980) is a drummer / percussionist and sonic sculptor from Porto. His career as a musician is characterized by his approach to a wide range of styles and languages, in bands like Sektor 304, HHY & The Macumbas, Unzen Pilot and Fail Better !, Contained Stone, Radial Chao Opera, Two White Monsters Around a Round Table, And has participated in numerous projects alongside names such as Steve Hubback, Fritz Hauser, Evan Parker, Marcello Magliocchi, Stefano Giust, George Haslam, Carlos "Zíngaro" and Rafael Toral. João Pais Filipe develops, in addition to his path as a musician, a work of building gongs, cymbals and other percussive metal instruments, through which he explores both the acoustic properties of these objects and their potential sculptural and imagery dimension.
