The collaboration between Magaibutsu label leader, Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins, Korekyojinn, Koenji, The World Heritage, &c) on drums, keyboards & voice, and Heldon mastermind Richard Pinhas on guitar & effects, continues with this CD of live material from their 2014 Japanese tour, extending the 2015 "Live in Japan" album, including the 8-part "Ascension". An impressive blend of keys and sustained guitar, the two evolve sophisticated progressions of great detail and technical skill. Yoshida's drumming drives both to great heights, building tension and then releasing it into wonder areas of psychedelic wonder, only to pick up the pace again and surprise their listeners with intense interplay of treated and effected guitar work against propulsive and shifting rhythms. Prog/kosmiche/psych, this music is very much alive in the hands of these two masters, and this album is a monster of spectacular skill and power.
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Richard Pinhas "Composer, guitarist and electronics innovator Richard Pinhas is recognized as one of France's major experimental musicians. A pivotal figure in the international development of electronic rock music, Pinhas' stature in France is analogous to Tangerine Dream's in Germany: the father figure of an entire musical movement. The pioneering, aggressive music produced by his band Heldon during the 1970s, fusing electronics, guitar and rock, heralded the industrial and techno to come and remains today vital and unsurpassed. The 'Father' of electronic music in France is also recognized as a world-class guitarist whose "diabolical guitar work" (Progression) earns comparisons with Robert Fripp. Pinhas received a degree in guitar at 17, and a PhD in philosophy from the Sorbonne, studying under philosopher Gilles Deleuze and writing on time and science fiction. He taught philosophy before abandoning an academic career for Heldon, his 3rd band, whose name derived from Normal Spinrad's writing. Over the course of his subsequent musical career, Pinhas' ongoing philosophical studies and interest in science fiction have fired, infused, and continually renewed his music." ^ Hide Bio for Richard Pinhas • Show Bio for Tatsuya Yoshida "Tatsuya Yoshida, born in Kitakami, Iwate is a Japanese musician; drummer and composer who is the only consistent member of the renowned progressive rock duo Ruins, as well as Koenji Hyakkei. He is also a member of the progressive rock trios Korekyojinn and Daimonji. Outside his own groups, Yoshida is renowned for his tenure as drummer in the indie progressive group YBO2, a band also featuring guitarist KK Null, whom he also joins in the current line up of Zeni Geva and he has played drums in a late edition of Samla Mammas Manna. He has been cited as "[the] indisputable master drummer of the Japanese underground". Along with his participation in bands, he has also released several solo recordings." ^ Hide Bio for Tatsuya Yoshida
