Recorded at Vermillion, in Seattle, Washington, on May 16th, 2019.
"This is a live recording made in Seattle in 2019, the final show of Virtual Balboa's west coast tour, a bumpy ride full of high highs and low lows, pan flute beatboxers, sadboy rappers, burglary, and unexpected detours into soggy terrain. The Virtual boys (Bennett, Darrup, and Lipson) were joined by trumpeter Greg Kelley for a type of saprophytic music that could only occur in an super-saturated environment.
The artwork, by Vancouver, BC-based artist Woojae Kim, consists of a sequence of a photograph being progressively decomposed by bacteria and fungi that were cultured from the very rock outcropping that the photo depicts.
The liner notes are a tall tale "based on actual events" as reported by none other than the most regular of Regular Guys, Rick Weaver. It's a true story of disintegration - biological, psychological, and societal, giving up the ghost of boundaries and deliquescing into a fertile, Pacific Northwestern humus. It is printed in a font so small that it would be hard to read were it not for the credit-card-sized magnifying lens included in the CD wallet [not true-Squidco]. Now that the credit card companies have jacked up their processing fees to around 4%, it may be time to upgrade to Clear, which could also help you inspect your corpus for parasitoids."-Virtual Balboa
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Zachary Darrup "Zachary Darrup is an improvising guitarist currently living in Philadelphia. During his early teenage years in the rural coal region of Pennsylvania a strange boy appeared like an angel, carrying a large cd booklet of wild musics of all sorts. This chance meeting at a pizza shop, plus tumultuous relationships with his home turf, school teachers, and other agents of law and rule enforcement led Zach to drop out and skip town, devoting himself to following music wherever it would take him--somewhere else. His techniques are informed by the musical possibilities of film language, jovial mockery and mimicry of plants, animals, and audience members, thoughtful room listening, word play, colors, and culinary experiments." ^ Hide Bio for Zachary Darrup • Show Bio for Evan Lipson Bassist Evan Lipson plays with experimental rock bands Psychotic Quartet, Satanized, Dynamite Club and Normal Love, and has performed with Jack Wright, Nate Wooley and Weasel Walter. ^ Hide Bio for Evan Lipson • Show Bio for Ben Bennett "Ben Bennett started playing music as a young child, took up the drums in middle school, and has always been attracted to improvisation. His interest in jazz moved steadily towards the more avant-guarde, then to free jazz, and onward into the world of free-improv. His current music stems mainly from various forms of free-improv: maximalist, reduced, noise, etc. A desire to get the most varied and visceral array of sounds from the simplest instruments has led to an ongoing process of distilling the drumset to its essential sound-maker, the vibrating membrane. Using extended techniques involving breath and friction, as well as the time-honored tradition of hitting things with sticks, he plays an evolving pile of frame drums, pre-tuned drum heads, metal things, tubes, and other objects that can be combined and recombined to get a variety of sounds during a performance. This set-up lends itself greatly towards being crammed in a backpack, strapped to a bike, dragged along the ground, or thrown down the stairs, generally without physical or psycological damage. Recent projects include: bst.cr - trio with Ryan Jewell and Wilson Shook, Wrest - with Jack Wright and Evan Lipson, Rotty What - trio with Jack Wright and John M Bennett; Central Ohio War Coalition - with Mike Shiflet, Joe Panzner, and others; duos with Ryan Jewell, Jack Callahan, and Ben Hall; and solo performances." ^ Hide Bio for Ben Bennett • Show Bio for Greg Kelley "Greg Kelley began studying the trumpet at age 10. He attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, where in addition to studying the Conservatory curriculum, he also immersed himself in a deep study of avant- garde and experimental music, eventually coming to the conclusion that his musical focus fell outside of the academic sphere. After his studies, Kelley moved back to his native Massachusetts, quickly insinuated himself into the local avant-garde circles and soon commenced a period of intense travel and collaboration, bringing him across the United States, throughout Europe, Japan and South America. He has appeared on over 60 albums and despite a more limited travel schedule, he still manages to play in a number of groups including Nmperign (as abstract improvisatory duo and as horn section for ex-Galaxie 500-ers Damon & Naomi), Heathen Shame, the undr quartet and the BSC, among others. Other collaborators have included Jandek, Keiji Haino, Donald Miller (Borbetomagus), Anthony Braxton, Kevin Drumm, Christian Wolff, Pauline Oliveros, Joe McPhee and Lionel Marchetti. In addition to playing the trumpet, Kelley has also recorded music using electronics and musique concrete elements, sometimes utilizing trumpet based sound sources, other times not." ^ Hide Bio for Greg Kelley
