"When I first saw laptops used in concerts, maybe around 1997 or 1998, I thought, 'how can these poor musicians afford such expensive machines and aren't they afraid it breaks, get stolen or crash? These days, the laptop seems to have disappeared from concerts or is less prominent at least, so imagine my surprise to see a release by something that is the Brasília Laptop Orchestra. At the end of the review, I will list the members. I am not sure, but I don't think I have heard of any of these people before. The orchestra started in 2012, and "they have been committed to incorporating the human body and movement into their production of sounds and images. And to create 'ecosophic' works that emphasize respect for the environment, social inclusion and the promotion of conscious human development and liberty". The orchestra is not fixed in membership, and amateurs and professionals are next to each other. Each player has their own speaker and their own source of sounds, sometimes encircling the audience. In that respect is, the stereo mix on a CD only half the fun. They use cameras to record their hand and body movements and translate that into music. Again, something is not present on the CD. As much as I like the music on this CD, I find it also hard not to think about the things we don't see and hear. In that respect, the CD falls short of the true thing. And, certainly, with the use of laptops, this is important. One of the things that saw them disappear off stage is that audience had no idea what the laptop did: "is the musician checking his email?" was heard a lot in the first decade of this century. The music reminds me of early electronic music and musique concrète and not as much of the much-used glitches, crackles and sine waves that crowded stages in the previous decade. The music is sometimes spacious, but that is also because these are live recordings picked up with a microphone. Among the pieces, there is a fine amount of variation to be noted, and throughout these pieces are around five minutes, which keeps this in some fine speed in the music, urgency if you will. "Bryan Day is a sonic adventurer, painter and inventor of curious things based in the East Bay. Using scavenged electronics, repurposed mechanical components and amplified materials that you might find in your garage or your great uncle's office, he re-imagines them into constructivist sound sculptures. Day has performed, taught workshops, and built sound installations across Europe, Asia and the Americas. He spends his days designing, building and fixing exhibits at the Exploratorium and Children's Creativity Museum in San Francisco.

Festival appearances include Soundwave Festival (San Francisco, 2014), Thingamajigs Festival (San Francisco, 2013), New Media Sound and Art Summit (Austin, 2013), Milwaukee Noise Festival (Milwaukee, 2012), Denver Noise Festival (Denver, 2011), Heliotrope Festival (Minneapolis, 2010), Megapolis Festival (Baltimore, 2010), Denver Noise Festival (Denver, 2010), Transistor Festival (Denver, 2009), Quiet Music Festival (Cork, Ireland, 2008), Sonic Circuits Festival (Washington, D.C., 2007), Soundfield Festival (Chicago, 2005), and SubZero Festival (Minneapolis, 2001). Day has over 40 solo and ensemble releases on labels such as Creative Sources, Bug Incision, Friends and Relatives, Gameboy, Freedom From, Digitalis, Featherspines, Neus-318, Journal of Experimental Fiction, Unread, and Seagull.

Since 1997 he has been running the new music label Public Eyesore and its sister label Eh?. Through Public Eyesore and Eh?, Day has produced and released over 250 albums of improvised and experimental music by artists from all over the globe and organized numerous tours for American artists in Japan. Day curated regular events at Canessa Gallery, Meridian Galley, Clawfoot House (Lincoln, 2009-2010), Tiptop Haus (Omaha, 2005-2007), The Magic Theatre (Omaha, 2006) and Sitting Still, Going Places first Friday series at Chatterbox (Lincoln, 2006-2007).

Day facilitates invented instrument building workshops, both to build instruments of his own design and freeform workshops that focus on building sound objects using repurposed materials. These include Whiskerphone, Rotowhisker, Sonic Marionette, Sound Mouse, Junk Kalimba and Circuit Bending. Get in touch if you are interested in hosting a workshop."
