"What does it sound like to be a working artist? Here, flutist Joe Melnicove, joined by his mentor, saxophonist George Garzone, drummer Billy Hart and bassist Ben Street, tries to convey it. You is You is inspired by a spirit of radical self-acceptance and self-knowledge, from a single melody he recorded at home in Rosh Pinna, Israel.
Recorded in New York, the songs have clear allusions to the experience of being musicians. Tracks like "Monday Night" and "No Applause" invoke the experience of a performance, and a nod to audiences awkwardly clapping (or not) at a jazz concert."A.F(Airflow)" recalls Hart's practice of playing long tones to enrich the sound of wind instruments, countering each flute note with the saxophone and the bass, acting as an echo to that first long tone.
"Compilation" is inspired by the Mingus approach to the blues; not a form, a feeling. As the melody returns after the solos, the band plays in perfect unison ending in a Mingus-esque collapse. "Sky Shines On August Sunday" is a ballad written by Liana Catalano-Garzone, dedicated to George's late son Anthony. Jerry Bergonzi, long time friend and collaborator of Garzone, joins in on piano, along with Melnicove on Alto Flute. This was the first and only take for this song.
Together, the four musicians enrich each other's sounds, illuminating the tension and experience of working as an artist."-577
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Joe Melnicove "Joseph Melnicove was born in Rosh Pinna, a small town in northern Israel. The music that was playing in his home by his two parents was a combination of old-school Blues, Mediterranean music, and Rock N' Roll. These he carries with him along his journey as a Jazz musician to help him feel at home. A classically trained musician, Joseph has been experimenting with Jazz and the flute ever since he was first exposed to records of John Coltrane and Charles Mingus while attending the music program at Emek-Hahula High-School. After 3 years of serving in the Israeli military, Joe began his studies at Rimon School of Music, where he attended the Jazz Institute for advanced performers, studying jazz improvisation and composition as well as arranging. After winning Rimon's Jazz player competition, and as a prize attending the IASJ convention of summer 2016, Joe began his studies at Berklee College of Music majoring in Performance. In Berklee, Joe has had the chance to study with many great teachers, and form his own unique sound in his musical journey. A recipient of the Jimmy Mosher award for outstanding musicianship, Joe feels that Berklee is the place where his music and his life started becoming a united entity, and ever since he is eager to share his musical thoughts with the world. As a constantly growing musician, Joe experiments with compositions, arrangements, and orchestrations that put the voice of the flute in a leading and supporting role in the jazz world." ^ Hide Bio for Joe Melnicove • Show Bio for Ben Street "Ben Street is an American jazz double bassist. Hart moved to New York in 1968, where he recorded with McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Zawinul, and played with Eddie Harris, Pharoah Sanders, and Marian McPartland.
