Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"'to explore (vol. 2)' follows on from Aspyrian's debut album - 'vol. 1' of the same name - released in 2023. It features six more original compositions from the band's three-day recording session in 2022, supported by the Help Musicians Record Release Fund.

The band have continued to rouse interest since the release of their first album, performing a sold-out show at the EFG London Jazz Festival and completing an 8-date tour in 2023. This second record solidifies Aspyrian's reputation as valuable contributors to the diverse UK Jazz scene."

Highlights include; a 2017 live performance on BBC Radio 3 with Nick Smart, Kit Downes, Tom Herbert and Martin France, alongside students from The Royal Academy of Music; a 10 month weekly residency from 2016-17 at The Jazz Café alongside Ashley Henry; a 2013 performance with his own project at the Royal Albert Hall 'Elgar Room' as part of the Proms Plus Late Sessions, which was later broadcast on BBC Radio 3; a 2013 UK tour with the same band, playing at renown venues on the jazz circuit.

"Jack Gillen began his musical life at age 7, studying classical guitar avidly before discovering Jimi Hendrix at age 15. This discovery opened up pathways into blues, jazz, rock and soul music, and ushered in an obsession with the electric guitar. After studying Jazz for 3 years at Leeds College of Music between 2010-2013, Jack returned to his hometown of London, cutting his teeth as a session guitarist/ co-writer/ musical director/ producer, working with artists in many different musical settings. After a few years of being a musical chameleon, he decided to dig deeper into his own identity as an artist and composer, the first evidence of this being his debut EP 'The Long Way Down'. Fusing Jazz, Rock, Folk, Blues, and Classical influences into a distinctive style of his own, the EP featured melodically focused compositions, dark harmonic twists and turns, lots of dynamic improvisational interaction between musicians, and raw, stinging guitar tones."

To Explore (Vol. 1)
(Hidden Threads)
A compelling and lyrical debut from the London-based trio Aspyrian of Robin Porter on tenor & soprano saxophones, Jack Gillen on guitar and Matt Parkinson on drums, the band name from Old English translating to "To search, explore, trace, discover, explain", which the band does with ebullient dexterity through seven original compositions from Porter and Parkinson.

MUC_ChamberArtTrio (Schindler / Geisse / Gramms)
Dachao Polyphonic
(FMR)
A remarkable concert as part of reedist Udo Schindler's LowToneStudies, referred to as "acoustronic" for the transformational aspects of each instrumentalist's playing, deceivingly electronic sounding despite being fully acoustic, captured live at Kulturschranne Dachau from the trio of Schindler, Gunnar Geisse on laptop guitar and Sebastian Gramss on double bass.
MUC Chamber Art Trio (Udo Schindler / Sebastian Grams / Gunnar Geisse)
Resilient Perspectives (...A Real Fact)

[LowToneStudies#9+]
Pellerin, Guy-Frank / Mattias Boss / Eugenio Sanna
Water Reflections
(FMR)
Three disparate improvisers--Guy-Frank Pellerin on soprano & tenor saxophones, Matthias Boss on violin & voice and Eugenio Sanna on amplified guitar plus small metallic layers, balloons & voice--present a non-idiomatic, fully improvised set of "sonorities, fragments, atmospheres seeming to constitute independent parts, but actually forming a unicum".
Banks / Canha / Porter / Taylor
Lost At Sea
(FMR)
Using as their inspiration the esthetic, soundscape and work of experimental Icelandic band Sigur Rós, the UK quartet of Dan Banks on piano, Jose Canha on bass, Trevor Taylor on drums and Robin Porter on saxophone present eight compositions written and arranged by pianist Banks, bringing the ethereal post-rock of Rós into the lyrical world of modern creative jazz.
Burke, Rob / Ben Monder / Tom Rainey / Ben Grayson
Slip Sliding
(FMR)
Rob Burke composed the first seven pieces for this experimental NY quartet, the multi-reedist joined by guitarist Ben Monder, drummer Tom Rainey, and Ben Grayson on electronics, the last "Discordat" a collective improvisation in 4 parts, as the band investigates emotional approaches to playing, using subtle distortion and Grayson's post-editing sonic additions.
Dunmall, Paul / Philip Gibbs / Ashley John Young
Now Has No Dimension
(FMR)
Live recordings from the trio of Paul Dunmall on soprano and tenor sax, Philip Gibbs on guitar, and Ashley John Young on double bass, performing at Cardiff University School of Music Concert Hall in 2016, a great example of concentrative, complex and lively interplay.
Dunmall, Paul / Philip Gibbs / Neil Metcalfe
The Ravens Look
(FMR)
Paul Dunmall performs on soprano sax along with clarinets and contra bassoon, in a give and take album with flutist Neil Metcalf and guitarist Philip Gibbs, a trio that allows space and a free melodic approach to guide their intelligent discourse.
Bailey, Derek / Trevor Watts / John Stevens
Dynamics of the Impromptu
(FMR)
Live recordings from 1973-74 from the trio of drummer John Stevens, guitarist Derek Bailey, and saxophonist Trevor Watts, dynamic works performed "impromptu" with a wealth of ideas as these innovators demonstrate the skills that helped define them as masterful players.

Gjerstad, Frode / Kevin Norton / David Watson
Tipples
(FMR)
Free improvising from saxophonist Frode Gjerstad and vibraphonist Kenvin Norton, recording in the same space as their previous duo CD, but with guitarist David Watson as a 3rd voice.
