Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Corbett vs. Dempsey is delighted to announce the release of the self-titled debut CD by the international quartet The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters.

The highly democratic foursome works in the productive netherworld between genres, where genres go to die. Integrating noise, jazz, electronic music, and pure mania, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters does not sit passively waiting for something to happen; in highly focused free improvisations, they take the proverbial bull by the horns with tempestuous throwdowns that have both a sense of abandon and an innate order. Danish saxophonist Mette Rasmussen singes the proceedings with bursts of alto while Anglo-Iranian turntablist Mariam Rezaei constructs a startling architecture with pioneering artistry. Italian piccolo trumpeter Gabriele Mitelli doubles on an array of electronics, and Austrian drummer Lukas Konig propels everything with propane power.

Who are the monsters that we produce in our dormant state? The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters ponders the question by means of sound and spontaneity, as Goya did with his incisive etchings. Like a defibrillator, they place paddles on the chest and give it a jolt, nine jolts in nine tracks, hoping to revive our moribund consciousness. Awaken the creative impulse, they urge us, or suffer the consequence."-Corbett VS. Dempey

"The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters" refers to an aquatint etching by Francisco Goya, created between 1797 and 1799. The artwork is part of Goya's series "Los Caprichos" and depicts a sleeping figure surrounded by fantastical, monstrous creatures. The title, "El sueño de la razón produce monstruos," translates to "The sleep of reason produces monsters". This piece reflects Goya's belief that imagination and reason are both crucial in art and that when reason sleeps, dark and irrational forces can emerge.

"Mette Rasmussen is a Danish saxophone player based in Trondheim, Norway. She works in the field of improvised music, drawing from a wide range of influences, spanning free jazz to textural soundwork. Rasmussen works on exploring the natural rawness of her instrument - experimenting on what the saxophone is capable of in sound and expression, with and without preparations. Much in demand, she has performed with the likes of Alan Silva, Chris Corsano, Ståle Liavik Solberg, and with her Trio Riot group with Sam Andreae and David Meier."

Austrian musician Lukas Koening is primarily a drummer. But there's a lot more than percussion happening on his latest solo album, Buffering Synapsis (opal tapes), from sputtering noise to fractured circuit breaking to creepy horror-soundtrack ambience. Using electronics and pedals along with his cymbal, Koening lets his imagination fly, leading to fascinating juxtapositions between tracks and sometimes even inside them. Despite the stylistic whiplash, Koening manages to instill his music with a sense of purpose, never blasting forward blindingly or tripping over himself to find a new sound. As a result, static churn, whirring spasms and terrifying echoes are like branches of the same highly-engaging musical tree.In recent years Koenig's solo work has repositioned itself toward a stuttering, data moshed version of the solo drummer. The imagery of brain tissues micro and macro being loaded, reloaded and exploded with data, time stamping and pure kinesis as conjured by the title of this album could not be more apt. With this recording an almost cartoon like level of intensity is sometimes reached through movement and movement alone. This is a music re-animating the "solo" drummers album while re-collecting it's history of new-complexity, lowercase, Bertoia-esque metal manipulations and all out free jazz fire music. Never drab or stuffy its cybernetic, hyper technical but above all; only accomplishable at the speed of thought. It's intrinsically human music. Deploying double kick drum played in stroboscopic clusters, hyper-tactile cymbal work, table top electronics and FX pedals to mute, melt and mutilate his flailing limbs and ocean like tam tam bathing. Buffering Synapsis is a tiny view into the creative world of an incredibly exciting and unique musician. (Texts by Opal Tapes + Marc Masters)
