Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

Beautiful studio works created by Steve MacLean (Dr. Nerve) using guitar and field recordings from the water's edge of frogs, bugs, birds, and pond ambiance.

"The inspiration for this work began with a plan to record some guitar material while on these tours of the countryside. Initial efforts to capture evening improvisations were accompanied by so many wonderful voices of frogs, bugs and other sounds, that these gained equal importance as elements of a 'collaboration'. In addition to the guitar recordings, it seemed essential to pursue to the closest recording proximity possible with the other sound voices for this odd 'ensemble'. By bringing the microphone directly into the reeds at the water's edge for individual frog and bug voices, it was possible to round out the collection of material brought back to the studio for a second phase of composition and production. Perhaps the most interesting outcome of using computer analysis on these sound files would be a discovery of some common musical language inherent in all sounds of nature, including frogs, bugs, birds and other animals as well. Once these musical 'patterns' are learned and in our musical memory of awareness they are clearly revealed time and again by birds and other living creatures, if you have the desire to listen for them. Though we may have no way of translating an actual language 'meaning' for these sounds, there's no way we can't enjoy a purely musical translation with an awareness toward specific and commonly heard musical phrases, rhythms, pitch combinations, or dynamic tendencies."-Steve MacLean, from the liner notes
