Recorded at Valentim de Carvalho Studios, Paco d"arcos, Portugal by Nelson Carvalho on April 21, 2008.
"For those who think jazz is not a church or a credo demanding preservation and controlled entries, it's a factor of curiosity the encounter between a chamber jazz trio incorporating world musics like Middle Eastern and Central European klezmer, Louisiana's cajun, Argentinian tango, French musette and Eastern European gypsy songs and a jazz pianist who builds his concepts in the continuity of the classical tradition and of contemporary music, also having a cinematic perspective solidified by his many film soundtracks. That's what is offered by the reunion of the idiosincratic Will Holshouser Trio (with it's two previous acclaimed records on Clean Feed, Reed Song and Singing to a Bee) with the Portuguese pianist extraordinaire Bernardo Sassetti. For all effects, it's the inner nature of jazz itself these four notable intrumentalists and composers/improvisers honour with such an iniciative: we should remember that the "great African-American music" is, from the beginning, the fruit of cultural hybridizations. This partnership was possible only because all the musicians are conscious that, in a global world, you need to think and act globally. With this formula, the accordion turns really a Dada musical instrument - 80 years after Tristan Tzara's manifesto. Holshauser's trio and Sassetti were finally able to "destroy the conventional symbology and logic", one of the objectives of that art movement in the start of the 20th century. A former disciple of Anthony Braxton (Holshouser), the musical director of Andrew Hill's later projects (Horton), the heir of the most exquisite double bass lineage (Phillips) and the voted Prince of Portuguese jazz (Sassetti) do it brilliantly in "Palace Ghosts and Drunken Hymns"."-Clean Feed Records
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Bernardo Sassetti "Bernardo da Costa Sassetti Pais (24 June 1970 - 10 May 2012) was a Portuguese jazz pianist and film composer. Sassetti was born in Lisbon. He was a great-grandson of Sidónio Pais, President of the First Republic. He initially played guitar, then began studying piano and music theory at age nine. He became interested in jazz after hearing Bill Evans. By the late 1980s, he was backing visiting musicians and teaching jazz piano in Lisbon (and, later, taught throughout other lusophonic areas). During the 1990s, he worked in London, where he recorded three albums with Guy Barker's group. Anthony Minghella invited them to appear as the Napoli Jazz Sextet in The Talented Mr. Ripley. His 2006 album Unreal: Sidewalk Cartoon received a four-star rating (of a possible four) in The Penguin Guide to Jazz (9th ed.), and was selected for The Penguin Jazz Guide: The History of the Music in the 1000 Best Albums. In addition to his jazz work, Sassetti has composed numerous film scores. Bernardo Sassetti was married to actress Beatriz Batarda, with whom he had two daughters. He died on 10 May 2012, after falling off a cliff in Guincho Cascais (Portugal), where he was reportedly shooting pictures for his next book." ^ Hide Bio for Bernardo Sassetti • Show Bio for Will Holshouser "Will Holshouser was given an accordion as a surprise when he was still young and impressionable. He has since found a unique niche for himself as an accordionist, improviser, and composer in many different areas of music. He tours regularly with jazz violinist Regina Carter and her band Reverse Thread. He also plays in a collaborative trio with Amsterdam-based improvisers, drummer Han Bennink & saxophonist/clarinetist Michael Moore. This group has a new CD out and has toured in Europe, the US and Africa. Will's long-standing trio features Ron Horton on trumpet and David Phillips on bass. Together since 1998, these three have developed a truly unified group sound. The trio has three CDs out on the Portuguese label Clean Feed. Their third CD, Palace Ghosts and Drunken Hymns was recorded in Portugal with the late, brilliant pianist Bernardo Sassetti as special guest. Will has also played with David Krakauer, Antony and the Johnsons, Martha Wainwright, Loudon Wainwright, Andy Statman, Phillip Johnston, Matt Munisteri & Brock Mumford, the Raymond Scott (tribute) Orchestrette, Roberto Rodriguez, Mark Morris Dance, New York City Ballet, Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, and many others. Will studied composition with Anthony Braxton and Bill Barron at Wesleyan University, where he received a grant to research Cajun and Creole music in Louisiana. After moving to New York in the early 1990s, he studied accordion with Dr. William Schimmel. He now lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and daughter. " ^ Hide Bio for Will Holshouser
