Recorded in concert on May 25th, 2010 at Coop Paradis in Rimouski.
Intense and understated electro-acoustic improvisation from saxophonists Jim Denley and Philippe Lauzier, electronic artist Pierre-Yves Martel, guitaris Kim Myhr and bassis Eric Normand.
"Recorded in May 2010, right after the appearance of the Denley/Lauzier/Martel/Myhr quartet at FIMAV. Denley and Myhr have worked together as a duo before, and so have Lauzier and Martel, and all four had given their premiere performance at FIMAV. Bassist/electronician Eric Normand joins this line-up for an intense microsonic-type free improvisation session. Telepathic acrobatics, a treasure of invention (Denley's flute techniques, Martel's controlled feedback, Myhr's distillations of acoustic guitar interventions). Very successful."-Francois Couture, Monsieur Delire
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Jim Denley "Jim Denley was born in Bulli, Australia in January 1957. Wind instruments and electronics are core elements of his musical output. An emphasis on spontaneity, site-specific work and collaboration has been central to his work. He sees no clear distinctions between his roles as instrumentalist, improviser and composer. Collaborations, his radio feature for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, won the Prix Italia in 1989. His interest in radio has continued with the ABC over 17 years. In May 2006 he recorded a program for the ABC in the Budawang Mountains, south-west of Sydney, which has now been made into a CD, Through Fire, Crevice and the Hidden Valley. This received an Honorary Mention in the Digital Musics category of the Prix Ars Electronica 2008. He has been to the Budawangs again to record a new program for the ABC, Co-existence. The ABC will enter the 2006 recordings in Prix Italia 2009. In 1990 he was a member of Derek Bailey's Company for a week of concerts in London. He co-founded the electroacoustic text/music group Machine for Making Sense. In 2006 and 2007 he received a Fellowship from the Australia Council for the Arts to research and develop his concept of Meta instrument. As part of this he formed the group Metalog - they toured Australia July 2008. He has played throughout Australia, Europe, Japan and the US with artists such as Chris Abrahams, Clare Cooper, Keith Rowe, Joel Stern, Robbie Avenaim, Jon Rose, John Butcher, Otomo Yoshide, Fred Frith, Phil Niblock, Trey Spruance, Clayton Thomas, Tess de Quincy, Axel Doerner, Adam Sussman, Ami Yoshida, Oren Ambarchi, Tony Buck, Ikue Mori, Satchiko M, Malcolm Goldstein and Annette Krebs." ^ Hide Bio for Jim Denley • Show Bio for Philippe Lauzier "Composer, improviser, instrumentalist (clarinet & saxophone) and sound artist, Philippe Lauzier participates in several projects that tour regularly in Canada and Europe, but also in USA, Latine America and Australia. In his solo and collective work, his ideas incorporate influences of contemporary musical languages as well as sounds from non-Western sources. Creative extended techniques, complex drones from which polyphonies emerge, and a certain compositional rigour are typical of his style. His interest for collaborative intermedia practices also leads him to create sound installation pieces, live performances for contemporary dance, theater music and many sound designs for visual art projects. Philippe lives in Montreal, Quebec." ^ Hide Bio for Philippe Lauzier • Show Bio for Pierre-Yves Martel "Pierre-Yves Martel. Born Vanier, Ontario, Canada, 1979. Residence: Montréal, Québec. Composer, Performer (viola da gamba, double bass, objects) Following a unique artistic path, Pierre-Yves Martel is constantly renewing his musical identity and practice. Though a instrumentalist, he identifies himself first and foremost as a sound artist whose work oscillates between perpetual research and experimentation. It is in this spirit that he has revisited the viola da gamba, utilizing this traditional instrument in new contexts and thus reengaging it with the contemporary world. Having created an authentic musical language through non-conventional techniques and instrumental preparations, he also works outside of instrumental music altogether, using a variety of objects rife with new sonic possibilities, from contact-mics and speakers to motors, wheels, surfaces and textures." ^ Hide Bio for Pierre-Yves Martel • Show Bio for Kim Myhr "Kim Myhr (N) born 1981, is an active voice on the Norwegian creative music scene, with regular performances across Europe, Australia, Asia and America. In 2008, he received the JazZtipend at the Molde International Jazz Festival. The prize included a commission for Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, a large ensemble consisting of thirteen handpicked improvisers from Norway and Australia, featuring Sidsel Endresen, Clare Cooper, Jim Denley and Christian Wallumrød among others. The one-hour piece, which was later released on CD entitled Â"stems and cagesÂ", recieved wide critical acclaim. Although composition is a valued activity for Myhr, his main focus remains improvisation and long-term collaborations. MURAL, a trio with Jim Denley and Ingar Zach, released Nectars of Emergence on SOFA in january 2010, and will release a concert from the Rothko Chapel done in march 2010, on Rothko Chapel Publications in august 2011. Other projects include Silencers (with Benoit Delbecq, Nils Ostendorf and Toma Gouband), Time Art Ensemble (with Michel Doneda, Matthias Muche and Sven Hahne), murmur (with Klaus Holm, Martin Taxt and Tor Haugerud) and duos with Sebastien Roux, Nils Ostendorf and Jim Denley. Myhr's first solo recording will be out on SOFA at the beginning of 2012. In addition to making music, Kim Myhr is also the director of the Fri Resonans festival, which has been presenting cutting-edge and innovative music in Trondheim, Norway since 2005. He is also co-running the record label SOFA." ^ Hide Bio for Kim Myhr • Show Bio for Eric Normand "Eric Normand is an improviser, bassist, instrument designer, composer, songwriter, singer and record and concert producer. He defines himself as an epidisciplinary musician, a free electron driven by its yearning for meetings. As an improviser, he develop a personal and radical playing on a homemade electric bass equipped with mics and objects feedbacking and vibrating in small electronic devices, creating electric flux interrupted by the instrumental gesture. With this set, he prefer to play duets, with Jim Denley (flute and sax), Philippe Lauzier (bass clarinet and sax), Sébastien Cirotteau (trumpet), Pierre-Yves Martel (viola de gamba and electronic), Jean-Luc Guionnet (saxophone), in addition of several spontaneous encounters. He also play in bands involved in a more specific musical genre as danced poetry with BABABA, instrumental theatre with Le Veau/ The Veal, songs with Les Pitounes and Éric Normand Chante and folk music with The Surruralits and RRRRoyal Canadian Free Form Folk Experience. Interested in collective creation and orchestral improvisation, he lead for seven years the GGRIL, a 15 pieces band that have worked with composers such as Evan Parker, Jean Derome, Robert Marcel Lepage and Michael Fischer. His music has been programmed by or performed in several festivals in Canada , Australia and Europe. It have also been broadcasted by Radio-Canada, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC, Radio-Grenouille, and several college radio stations." ^ Hide Bio for Eric Normand
