"Hugo Carvalhais was born in Oporto/ Portugal and took a degree in Painting at the Fine Arts School there. Despite being self-taught, Carvalhais studied and participated in seminars with musicians including Ron Carter, Eddie Gomez, Hein Van de Geyn, Mario Pavone, Carlos Bica and Miroslav Vitous. Considered as one of the most talented and "sui generis" Portuguese double-bass players of his generation, Hugo has worked with musicians such as Julian Arguelles, Tim Berne, Emile Parisien, Dominique Pifarély, Liudas Mockunas, Sheila Jordan, Jefferey Davis, Art Themen, among others.

2010 sees the launch of his first record as a leader featuring saxophone player Tim Berne. "Nebulosa" was considered one of the best albums of the year by "Jazz.pt" magazine and received outstanding reviews by national and international press. The album was also chosen among the most representative records of Clean Feed label by their 10th anniversary.

In 2012 Hugo Carvalhais releases is second album called "Particula" with his regular band mates ( Gabriel Pinto, Mário Costa ) and the participation of Dominique Pifarély and Emile Parisien. "The saxophonist Emile Parisien, born in 1982, enrolls in Marciac college in 1993, where he enjoys a musical formation with experienced musicians such as Pierre Boussaguet, Guy Laffitte, and Tonton Salut.

Over these years, he has the opportunity to work with several leading figures of jazz: Wynton Marsalis, Chris Mc Bride, Johnny Griffin, or Bobby Hutcherson, who give him the opportunity to play with them on the Marciac Jazz festival.

From 1996 on, he pursues further his formation at the Conservatoire de Toulouse where he studies classical and contemporary music with Philippe Lecoq. In 2000, Emile Parisien moves to Paris. In 2004, he takes part in the creation of the show HIP 11, which mixes jazz and hip-hop dances. The same year, he asserts his artistic identity by founding the group Emile Parisien Quartet with Julien Touery (piano), Sylvain Darrifourcq (drums) and Ivan Gélugne (double bass). Inspired by composers of the 20th century, such as John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, or Ornette Coleman, this quartet adds a kind of expressionist character to its music, where improvisation is the guiding principle. By pushing the limits of the concrete, the group acquires, thanks to the complicity of its musicians, a very personal and resolutely modern expression.

In 2007, Emile Parisien was elected Talent of Jazz of the Fond d'action Sacem for 3 years in a row. It is with this support that the quartet records its two discs at the label LABORIE Jazz. "Au revoir porc-épic" in 2007, and "Original Pimpant" in 2009, which received good reviews both from professionals and amateurs.

In September 2009, the Emile Parisian Quartet is offered the Franck Ténot prize, discovery of the year of the Victoires de la musique and they are award-winners of the program Jazz Migration which is put into place by Afijma. In 2012 Emile Parisien was elected "best french musician of the year" by the Académie du Jazz. in 2014 new recording "Belle Epoque" on Act records in duo with Vincent Peirani, and he is one the musician of the "Generation Spedidam" In 2014 he won "the Victoires de la Musique" for his record in duo "belle époque" with Vincent Peirani."

Gabriel Pinto: "Born in Porto in 1977. He began studying music at the age of nine, and from the age of 17 he began to focus on listening to progressive and psychedelic rock from the 70's and avant-garde composers from the 20th century. At the age of 18 he entered the Conservatory of Music of Porto to study classical piano and there he had his first contact with jazz. He participated in workshops and seminars with musicians such as Mario Rossi, Mário Laginha, George Colligan, Don Byron, Cecil Bridgewater, among others.

He made his recording debut with the CD Nebulosa by Hugo Carvalhais (Clean Feed). He currently plays in the group led by this bassist."

"Dominique Pifarély modernized jazz violin, combining extraordinary technical skills with an inclusive idea of music-making. He has been soon very in-demand as a straight jazz player, but was soon in some of the more adventurous groups in Europe, too, including Mike Westbrook's band (On Dukes' Birthday, hatART) and the Vienna Art Orchestra.

In 1979, he began touring with bassist Didier Levallet and guitarist Gérard Marais as a trio. In the 1980s he began leading his own bands, as can be heard on 2 records, Insula Dulcamara (1988) et Oblique (1992).

In 1985, Pifarély started to work with reedist Louis Sclavis and in 1992, they formed the Sclavis/Pifarély Acoustic Quartet, featuring guitarist Marc Ducret and bassist Bruno Chevillon, and recorded for ECM. In the late 1990s, he started a duo work with pianist François Couturier, and they recorded a prominent album (Poros, ECM, 1997).

In the 2000's, Dominique Pifarély leads different personal projects. Impromptu is a development of the collaboration with François Couturier, adding counter tenor Dominique Visse and a work on contemporary poetry. He initiated numerous text/music experiences with french writer François Bon and actors Violaine Schwartz and Pierre Baux. The Dédales Ensemble is a acoustic nine piece band. He founded in 2007 a trio with keyboard player Julien Padovani and drummer Eric Groleau, and the Dédales Ensemble ("Time Geography", Poros éditions, 2013), played in duo with Michele Rabbia or Vincent Courtois,

In his mature style, the classical violin tradition and the swing lessons combine with a contemporary European sonic exploration ; his technical mastery and quick imagination allow him to move seamlessly between these worlds.

Dominique Pifarély created in 2014 a new quartet with Antonin Rayon on piano, Bruno Chevillon on double bass and François Merville on drums ("Tracé provisoire", ECM, 2016), and gives solo recitals. Then he is part, since 2015, of the collaborative trio Sclavis/Pifarély/Courtois ("Asian fields variations", ECM, 2017).

He regularly performs in whole Europe, and has been touring in USA, Canada, Japan, India, Middle East, Latin America or Africa."

"Mário Costa, was born in 1986 in Viana do Castelo. Starts the study of the drums at 7 years of age. His learning path passes through the Vocational School of Music of Viana do Castelo where he studies percussion with teachers Rui Rodrigues, Nuno Aroso and Pedro Oliveira. In 2008 he graduated in Jazz from ESMAE, under the guidance of Professor Michael Lauren. In that same year, he moved to the United States where he attended private lessons with Ian Froman, Rodney Green, Ari Hoening, Eric Harland, John Riley and Hal Crook. He attends and participates in workshops with Jeff Ballard, Adam Cruz, Ferenc Nemeth, Peter Erskin, Dom Famularo, Billy Hart, Alexandre Frazão, Marc Miralta, Allan Ferber, Chris Corsano, David Freedman, Billy Coabhan, John Riley, Dan Weiss, among others.

He is an award-winning drummer with a number of distinctions in the music scene, including the 1st Prize at the "II Young Performers Competition" in Spain, 1st prize at the "Tum-Pa-Tum-Pa" drum competition ) and the 1st prize in the "Yamaha Drum Sessions" in the category of over 18 years.

In 2010 he is invited by Casa da Música to present his project "Mário Costa - Homo Sapiens" in the cycle "New Values ​​of Jazz". At the same time he is invited to participate in various projects in festivals, such as: Serralves in Festa - "Adapt / Oppose", "Corsano - Queijo - Costa" and Trama - Festival of Performative Arts - "Improvisations / Collaborations".
