Recorded July 2-3, 2014 at Studio de Meudon, in France, by Etienne Bultingaire.
"A big surprise for all those who thought that the first and only Benoît Delbecq's project with the piano jazz trio format ended with the unfortunate death of bassist Jean-Jacques Avenel in 2014. Here comes again the formula debuted in 2010 with the album The Sixth Jump, now with Canadian, but Berlin-based, Miles Perkin playing the upright bass under Avenel's influence, but with a voice of his own. Emile Biayenda, the Congolese drummer revealed by that first opus, stayed for more. Not more of the same, but taking to new grounds the ideas put into practice five years ago.
As Fred Hersch (Delbecq's partner in "Fun House") writes on the liner notes, INK is a brilliant "collection of contradictions": structure versus improvisational freedom, jazz versus non-jazz, mathematics versus deep feelings. As usual, the French musician applies his personal vision of the prepared piano, assembling the sound worlds of Gyorgy Ligeti and the African pygmies with the jazz tradition coming from Duke Ellington and continuing through Steve Lacy. The final results are pure joy, and Hersch, one of the most important pianists of our time, has no doubts - he calls Benoît Delbecq a genius."-Clean Feed Records

He is a renown specialist for a personal and polymetric approach of "prepared piano", and has also an regular activity in the electronic department. His works are experimenting a blend of improvisation and composition in which he reveals a rich pallet of sounds, enlightened by stratas of multiple momentums, articulations and seemingly floating harmonies. Inspired by alternative urban musical experiments and electronic music adventures, he also improvises a personal approach of drum'n bass and ambient. Benoît was awarded 'Prix jeunes affiches de la SACEM' in 1995 with group KARTET, prix de la Villa Médicis Hors-les-murs 2001 for his first solo piano recording " Nu-Turn " (Songlines, 2003), was awarded with the fellowship of Civitella Fundation (New York, 2009), was awarded in 2010 a double Grand Prix International du Disque (Académie Charles Cros, the French Grammy Awards), and his trio CD "The Sixth Jump " (Songlines) was listed in the New York Times top ten jazz/pop records of 2010. His works for the Fred Hersch/Benoît Delbecq FUN HOUSE double trio (premiered and recorded in May 2012, to be released FEB 2013) have recently received the French Ministère de la Culture " Commande d'Etat " funding. Recently he was commissioned by JAZZTOPAD Festival in Wroclaw (Poland) for a new piece for the Lutoslawski String Quartet and two improvisers (Miles Perkin on bass and himself on piano)." ^ Hide Bio for Benoit Delbecq • Show Bio for Miles Perkin "Miles Perkin (b. 1980) A unique voice on the Double Bass, his captivating solo sets juxtapose his clear singing voice against the wild overtones and deep resonances projecting from his bass.
