"Extrapolations a wider scope of textures created during heightened improvisations, the five tracks on this CD also demarcate how to achieve sonic ecstasy - estasi in Italian - despite bare bones instrumentation. Recorded during a protracted residency in an antique French church, contrabass clarinetist Ugo Boscain and double bassist Fred Marty stretch out with extended techniques to reach a rapprochement that is as remarkable as it is restrained.

Trained in notated music, Paris-based Boscain, also studied with the likes of bassist Joelle Leandre and saxophonist Evan Parker, has played with Leandre and trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini and is also a mathematical researcher.

A member of Paris' l'ONCEIM orchestra, Marty has worked in duos with figures such as laptoppist Jean Marc Foussat and percussionist Yuko Oshima. But this is an altogether more hushed affair. Like astronauts conducting their training within insulated surroundings, string plucking and battering plus reed snarling and split tones are so often advanced with an air of subdued seriousness that the interchange could be redolent of two surgeons in the midst of a delicate operation.

Low key doesn't mean low-energy however, for on "La nascita del grido" for instance, buzzing tongue slaps and string preparations strengthen the contrapuntal patterns in such a way that unprecedented thunderstorm is suggested. As well, a piece such as "Spazio in attesa" may begin with the seriousness of plainsong but end up exposing a sprightly melody.

Probably the best instance of this transformation occurs on "L'amore dodecafonico". Discordantr string stretching and spilling plus grating reed yelps and squeals are slowly buffeted into pleasant ambulatory motion. Finally the conclusion can only be acknowledged as inevitable as lowing reed tones and pungent glissandi move into connective interface.

"Ugo Boscain, born in 1968, he studied classic piano (graduated in 1991 at Conservatorio di Alessandria, Italy), composition (Conservatorio di Torino) and orchestral conducting (Orvieto, corsi di Spazio Musica). At the same time he showed a deep interest in improvised music. He studied with Steve Lacy, Mal Waldron, Joelle Leandre, Evan Parker and Johannes Bauer. Since the late 80s he is an active pianist improvviser. He was co-funder of the group ``Enten Eller'' in Turin (Italy).

He played with Tristan Hossinger, Joelle Leandre, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Carlo Actis Dato, Giovanni Maier, Claude Parle, Theo Nabicht and many others musicians. In the last 10 years he has actively devoted himself to the study of the contrabass clarinet. Nowadays he is one of the few specialists of this very rare instrument. He recorded about 10 CDs and made more than 100 concerts. In 2015, he played for the Sonic Genome of Anthony Braxton in Torino. Beside music, he is researcher in Mathematics at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (France) and professor of Control Theory at Ecole Polytechnique (Paris)."

"Fred Marty was born in Blaye (Gironde) in 1970. After studying classical bass studies, he devoted his work to improvisation and experimentation of various game modes on bass. He strives to develop a personal language, inspired by everyday sounds, making some forget the bass itself (distorted sounds, harmonics "gaps" in incomplete or misleading spectrum percussion sounds without specific height, sounds The rubbing of the fingers or the hand on the body of the double bass). He also modifies the timbre by inserting between ropes of wooden or metal rods. Each part of the body of the double bass becomes an instrument of its own.
