Recorded at Vortex Jazz Club by Alex Ward on 13th January 2015. Mixed and mastered by Alex Ward. Produced by Julie Kjær.
"The list of astonishing women saxophonists is getting bigger, and to that list there's one more name you should add: Julie Kjær. Originally from Denmark, but living in the United Kingdom and active on the London scene, this new star on the rise brings trouble, in a good, very good way, to every place she goes.
Kjær has played with Django Bates in the band StoRMChaser, she is a member of Paal Nilssen-Love's Large Unit and the London Improvisers Orchestra, at the same time leading or co-leading projects with Danish and British musicians like Pierette Ensemble and Musson/Kjær/Marshall, and associating herself with prized performers like Hannah Marshall, Alison Blunt, John Russel, Veryan Weston and Steve Beresford.
Now, she debuts a record with two veterans in the fields of open form jazz and free improvisation, John Edwards and Steve Noble. And what a record it is! The trio experiments with the confluences between composition and spontaneity, and between classical elements, the kind of drive you only find in jazz, and extended techniques coming from the most extreme exploratory music. Sound and rhythm are her main focus, pushing the envelope in any circumstances and often surprising even those who are used to new ideas and approaches. The music here is either wild or subtle, intense or minimalistic, but always precious. You don't want to miss it."-Clean Feed
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Julie Kjaer "Saxophonist, flautist and composer Julie Kjær's edgy and thoughtfull playing and 'dark, otherworldly imagery' (Jazzwise) has become incerasingly evident around Europe, inhabiting ground between composition and free improv. Experimenting with extended techniques, sound and rhythm she pushes her instruments to their limits. She has toured internationally and recorded with Django Bates and his band StoRMChaser. Currently her main focus is on her trio, Julie Kjær 3, with bass player John Edwards and drummer Steve Noble. Their debut album 'Dobbeltgænger' was just released on 14th March '16 on Clean Feed Records. She tours internationally with Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and his Large Unit. Other main projects are a trio with Rachel Musson and Hannah Marshall and Danish-English sextet 'Pierette Ensemble', which she co leads with Danish composer and piano player Signe Bisgaard. The ensemble's debut was cd released February 2014. She plays with London Improvisers Orchestra and is a leader and sidewoman of several other English and Danish ensembles. She associates herself with prized performers like Mark Sanders, Dave Douglas, Louis Moholo-Moholo, John Russel, Dave Liebman, Laura Jurd, 'Leafcutter' John, Mira Calix, Veryan Weston and Steve Beresford." ^ Hide Bio for Julie Kjaer • Show Bio for John Edwards "After taking up the bass, around 1987, John Edwards co-formed The Pointy Birds who went on to win awards for their music for The Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs dance troupes. The group appeared at festivals in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Moers, Leverkusen, Copenhagen. Around 1990, Edwards played his first gigs with London improvisers such as Roger Turner, Lol Coxhill, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton. Between 1990 and 1995 Edwards was a member of three touring groups simultaneously: B-Shops For The Poor, The Honkies and GOD. During this period he also became an increasingly regular player on the London improvised music scene and performed his first solo gigs; he composed and performed music theatre with the bass and cello duo The Great Explorers, street-busked a lot and appeared at many more festivals in Germany, Estonia, France, Italy, Czech, etc. Since 1995 John Edwards has become a "mainstay" of the London scene, playing with just about everybody, an activity that has seen him clocking up between 150 and 200 gigs a year. He has become regular player with Evan Parker, in many groupings, and with Tony Bevan, Veryan Weston, and Elton Dean, often in collaboration with Mark Sanders on percussion. He has become a more frequent player on the European (and festival) scene, appearing at Taktlos, Ulrichsburg, Nickelsdorf, Budapest, New Zealand and in the USA. He continues to work on solo performances." ^ Hide Bio for John Edwards • Show Bio for Steve Noble "Steve Noble is London's leading drummer, a fearless and constantly inventive improviser whose super-precise, ultra-propulsive and hyper-detailed playing has galvanized encounters with Derek Bailey, Matthew Shipp, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Stephen O'Malley, Joe McPhee, Alex Ward, Rhodri Davies and many, many more. In the early eighties, Noble played with the Nigerian master drummer Elkan Ogunde, Rip Rig and Panic, Brion Gysin and the Bow Gamelan Ensemble, before going on to work with the pianist Alex Maguire and with Derek Bailey (including Company Weeks 1987, 89 and 90). He was featured in the Bailey's excellent TV series on Improvisation for Channel 4 based on his book 'Improvisation; its nature and practise'. He has toured and performed throughout Europe, Africa and America and currently leads the groups N.E.W (with John Edwards and Alex Ward) and DECOY (with John Edwards and Alexander Hawkins)." ^ Hide Bio for Steve Noble
