"Although some improvisers deny that one of the main parameters that they deal in their projects is the language, this almost always ends (I would say until always) to happen. The interest of the music that results depends on what they do at that level, and the procedural and aesthetic nuances that lead them to that end are not countable by the fingers of both hands. They can go from the explicit crossings of languages and their lexicon like those that identify the Coax Orchestra to something like what we hear in this "Hightailing" from a band based in the Netherlands, directed by the saxophonist Ruben Verbruggen and featuring the participation of the Belgian Bart Maris in trumpet (yes, the same from the X-Legged Sally, Flat Earth Society and God) and the Portuguese Goncalo Almeida (and yes, the Lama and the Albatre) on the double bass. If in the case of the French ensemble joining bossa nova and noise goes through a kind of perversion, or subversion, of formalism, already inthe Bulliphant it is a historicist perspective that tells us that the heritage of jazz exists to be ), in contexts that seem to have nothing to do with it, namely those introduced by Thijs Trech's experimental electronics. The booze of the quintet (complete with the drums and percussion of Friso van Wijck) emerge, like pieces of meat from the bottom of the pan, the bebop, the hard bop, the cool, the free jazz, the jazz-rock, and with an undifferentiation that seems to appear at random. But, since there are compositions to circumscribe what is improvised along the themes, chance began right away in writing. Simply put, these idiomatic elements are at your disposal, being only necessary to get them out of the bag. That is, Coax Orchestra's relationship with jazz, modern music by condition, is postmodern, because it plays with irony, while the Bulliphant is metamodern, with cynicism as its strategy. Faced with this, the fusion of the Seventies and the collage of the Nineties, plus whatthe French referred to above in the recent Jazz in August with reference to these two models, but already wanting to surpass them, were still approaches to children - the adult is here. Maturity teaches us that creating is working with memory, but doubting it, putting it into question and deactifying it."-Rui Eduardo Paes, Jazz.pt (via Google Translate)
