Recorded live at The Museum of Contemporary Art, in Los Angeles, California, on March 16th, 2017, by Felix Salazar.
A West Coast trio of electric and acoustic jazz from Patrick Shiroishi on alto & soprano saxophones, Dylan Fujioka on drums, and Paco Casanova on keyboards and electric piano, performing live at The Museum of Contemporary Art in LA in 2017 for an extended journey, at times psychedelic and others contemporary but always serious, revelatory and commanding. One hears echoes of both rock and electric improv with a 70s feeling, the electric piano giving a particular flavor to the performance. Shiroshi plays with emotional power, using impressive technique as both a lead and rhythmic support to the group interplay. At times the band consumes the listener with sonic environments, then shifts into collective interplay of a quirkier nature, alternating in a leisurely way between approaches with seamless strength. Fujioka supports and contrasts the other players, and the last few minutes find him asserting himself as Shiroishi and Casanova intervene in unusual phrasing and interaction. The results are impressive, reminding the listener of the legacy of decades of electric jazz while remaining modern and creating vital new music.
