Stavanger's nyMusikk manager, and cross-genre violinist with a master's degree from NTNU. Equally at home in the Kitchen Orchestra and with Gunhild Seim as in the improv landscape with Vidar Schanche. Also seen constantly in full symphonic unfolding with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra." ^ Hide Bio for Gro Austgulen • Show Bio for Stale Birkeland Norwegian drummer Ståle Birkeland is a known for the groups Kitchen Orchestra, and The Geordie Approach. ^ Hide Bio for Stale Birkeland • Show Bio for Petter Frost Fadnes Petter Frost Fadnes: "I'm a saxophone player, and Director of Studies (jazz) at The Department of Music and Dance, University of Stavanger. I've played regularly since the age of 16, performing within everything from heavy metal to ska, improvised music and jazz. In 1996 I moved to the UK to do a degree in jazz; staying in Higher Education for eight years, ending up with a PhD in Performance in 2004. I've been active in and around the vibrant Leeds music-scene for a number of years, and co-founded Leeds Improvised Music Association (LIMA). A few years ago I moved back to my hometown to work as a freelance musician, while taking up a post at the University of Stavanger. I perform with players from Norway and the UK, and continue to seek 'the perfect melody' through eclectic musical approaches. I perform regularly with Kitchen Orchestra, The Geordie Approach, Metropolis and The Thin Red Line. My main research interest is looking at improvisational processes through musical performance. In other words, I'm keen on picking musicians' brains by actually playing with them (which is not just an excuse to play ' honestly!). My overall mission is to demystify improvisational music making, and reveal the musical thought lurking within the performance." ^ Hide Bio for Petter Frost Fadnes • Show Bio for Dag Magnus Narvesen "I discovered free improvised music at the age of 16. As a drummer who was quite fed up with just filling the "time-keeping-role", the first encounter with musicians as Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman and Peter Brötzmann altered my musical course quite considerably. The intense musical energy and the immense presence of the musicians simply blew my young brain away. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to be able to expand my musical perception through playing with truly great musicians (to whom I can never be thankful enough), listening to a tiny bit of the music available in this world (some of it introduced to me by friends to whom I also owe thanks) and through composing music on my own, some of which you can find under SOUNDS in the menu to the left." ^ Hide Bio for Dag Magnus Narvesen • Show Bio for Scott Tinkler "Australian trumpeter Scott Tinkler has been performing professionally since 1983 and is well known for his many brilliant incarnations as an ensemble player, recording and touring with such groups as the Australian Art Orchestra, Mark Simmonds Freeboppers, The Paul Grabowsky Quintet and The Dale Barlow Quintet as well as with international artists such as Mark Helias, Joe Lovano, Betty Carter, Branford Marsalis, Han Bennink, Billy Harper, Arthur Blythe, Cindy Blackman, Guru Kaaraikkudi Mani etc. It was, however, his debut as a bandleader in 1993 that really brought him to the attention of both the media and the public. His Melbourne based Scott Tinkler Quartet with Grabowsky, Rex and Lambie received rave reviews for live performances and the quartet's two CD's The Back Of My Head and Hop To The Cow both received ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Awards) nominations. With a move to Sydney Scott's next project, The Scott Tinkler Trio, with Simon Barker and Adam Armstrong, continued the tradition of excellence with inspired recordings and performances of Tinkler's strong original music. The trios much awaited ARIA nominated CD Dance Of Delulian was released in October 1996 and established Scott as a powerful stylist and composer; not only Australia's leading trumpet player but a major force in contemporary music. In 1997 Scott received an Australia Council grant to tour Europe and America. This venture culminated in the recording of the CD Sofa King at New York's Knitting Factory. On completion of this tour Tinkler spent the next 18 months in Europe performing, recording and teaching before returning to Australia where his Trio's third CD Shrike Like was released in 1999. In April 2003 Scott joined his long time associate Paul Grabowsky on a trip to New York to record an album of Pauls original music with Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Ed Schuller and Jeff "Tain" Watts. Tales Of Time and Space has now been released on the Warner label to stunning reviews, many highlighting Scott's stellar contribution to Paul's music. With his recent move back to Melbourne, Scott is spending much of his time composing and performing with his Trio as well as providing a unique presence in various Australian new music ensembles including Elision, Hydromus Krysogast and the Australian Art Orchestra. Scott is now lecturing at the Victorian College of the Arts and Monash University and has given master classes at the Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane Conservatoriums, Southern Cross University and the Hong Kong Polytechnique University. Scott was also a guest in New York at the "New School of Jazz" and when in Europe gives master classes at the Den Haag Royal and Rotterdam Conservatoriums in the Netherlands. Scott has received grants and invitations to perform through out the world in many diverse and rewarding situations in countries such as England, China, The Netherlands, America, Vietnam, France, India, Germany, New Caledonia, Norway and Tanzania." ^ Hide Bio for Scott Tinkler • Show Bio for Erkki Veltheim "Erkki Veltheim (b. 1976 Finland) is an Australian composer, improviser, performer and interdisciplinary artist. Erkki has been commissioned by the Adelaide Festival, Vivid Festival, Australian Art Orchestra and Soundstream Collective, and his pieces have been performed by groups such as the London Sinfonietta, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
