Sophia Goidinger is an Austrian violinist, known for the groups Orchester Der Akademie St. Blasius, Studio Dan, and her duo with Maiken Beer, Strings & Noise.

"Julia Purgina (composer / viola)

Born in Straubing, Germany in 1980, Austrian composer and Violist Julia Purgina studied viola with Wolfgang Klos and composition with Erich Urbanner and Chaya Czernowin at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Additionally she was a student of Ulrich Knörzer at the Berlin University of the Arts. Ms. Purgina holds a double masters degree in viola and composition from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Additionally, she is interested in Philology and has started studies in German and Slovak Languages at the Vienna University in 2011.

Julia Purgina has received numerous prizes and scholarships including the Theodor Körner Prize, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra Stipend, the Viktor Fohn Stipend, the Antonio Salieri Composition Prize, the Startstipendium 2009 and the Staatsstipendium for composers 2013 from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture.

From 1999-2004 she was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. Ms. Purgina played in the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra from 2004-2007. Though her primary focus is on the performance of modern music, she also performs frequently with orchestras such as the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Vienna Volksoper, the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria and the Wiener Kammerphilharmonie. She is co-founder of ensemble LUX and was a member of Ensemble Reconsil and the jazz group Studio Dan. She performed Roland Freisitzer's Viola Concerto as a soloist with Ensemble Reconsil in Vienna and composers such as Erich Urbanner, Ivo Nilsson and Thomas Heinisch have writiten viola concertos (or double concertos including the viola as solo instrument) which are dedicated to her. In Spring 2010, Ms. Purgina performed her own viola concerto and a composition for viola and ensemble by Bruno Stobl with Studio New Music Moscow in the Rachmaninov Hall in the Tschaikovsky Conservatory. As a composer, Julia Purgina has had commissions and performances from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Wien Modern, Hugo Wolf Quartet, Ensemble Kontrapunkte, Ensemble Reconsil Vienna, oenm, Aspekte Festival, Ensemble XX. Jahrhundert, sirene operntheater, Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Platypus Ensemble, Studio Dan, Ensemble Wiener Collage, the Theater in Kempten (Germany) and the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt, among others. Her work has been conducted by conductors like Sylvain Cambreling, Andrew Manze, Stefan Solyom, Roland Freisitzer, Peter Keuschnig, Peter Burwik, Mei-Ann Chen, Cecilia Martin-Löf, Eugene Tzigane, Gemma New and others. She has been a composer in residence at the Mittersill Composer Forum (KOFOMI). During the 2013/2014 seasons she was "Composer-in-Residence" with the "Wiener Concertverein". In October 2014, she is one of three featured composers at Soundings Festival in London.

Her orchestra piece "Akatalepsia" (performed by Vienna Symphony Orchester and Sylvain Cambering at Wien Modern 2018) was entered for the Rostrum of composers 2019 by the Austrian broadcast corporation.

In September 2016, Julia Purgina was appointed University Professor and Head of Strings at the MUK (Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien). Her teaching focus is contemporary music (practical and theoretical), analysis and arranging techniques."

"Maiken Beer, born in 1977 in Vienna, is a freelance cellist for classical, contemporary, and improvised music. She is the founder of the duo "celloduoburghardbeer" and a member of the Black Page Orchestra. She has also worked with, among many others, Clemens Wenger, Matthias Kranebitter, Julia Purgina, Mirela Ivičević, the JazzWerkstatt Vienna, Neue Oper Wien, snim, Ensemble szene instrumental, Janus Ensemble, and Ensemble Reconsil."

"Maria Jauk comes from Lobmingtal/Styria and began her musical education at pre-school age. She found her way to the flute through recorder and piano lessons. After graduating from high school, she studied instrumental pedagogy with Raphael Leone and Barbara Gisler-Haase at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, as well as concert performance with Barbara Gisler-Haase. Studying musicology at the University of Vienna, a year abroad as part of the Erasmus program with Herman van Kogelenberg at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and numerous master classes with Peter-Lukas Graf, Walter Auer, Michael Martin Kofler, Kersten McCall, Karl-Heinz, among others Schütz, Katharina Kutnewsky and Patricia Morris completed their training.

Maria Jauk is a prizewinner at the international flute competition "Friedrich Kuhlau" (2009), won a special prize at Gradus ad Parnassum in 2010, is a Thyll Foundation scholarship holder and received a performance scholarship from the MDW.

Her concert activities included performances with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Volksoper, the Opera Ball Orchestra and the ensembles Webern Wind Quintet, Studio Dan and the Conflusio Quartet. The Webern Wind Quintet has already given concerts in Tehran, Cyprus, Budapest, Moscow, Ottawa, New York, in the Wiener Musikverein and in the Suntory Hall in Tokyo as well as at the Nuova Consonaza Festival in Rome. It also took part in the children's concert series "Triolino" and performed in Zell am See, St. Lambrecht, Horn and in the MuTh in Vienna. This wind quintet won first prize at the Josef Windisch Chamber Music Competition in Vienna in 2012, and a little later it won the international woodwind quintet competition "Henri Tomasi" in Marseille, where it won third prize. It also received the special prize for the interpretation of the commissioned work by Tapio Tuomela.

After winning the audition, Maria Jauk was engaged from 2016 to 2019 as a maternity leave substitute for the position of solo piccolo with the obligation to play the flute in the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria. During this time, tours took her to Japan, Germany and England. From 2014 to 2018 Maria Jauk was a teacher at the Johannes Brahms Music School Mürzzuschlag, she taught the gifted class at the Johann Sebastian Bach Music School Vienna from 2016-2020 and during the same period was a lecturer for flute teaching practice at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Maria Jauk has been Senior Lecturer at the Franz Schubert Institute since 2021."

"Mario Rom (* 1990 in Hall near Admont) is an Austrian jazz musician (trumpet, composition).

At the age of eight, Rome received his first trumpet lessons from his father, with whom he also played in the school big band in Admont. From 2004 to 2013 he studied classical trumpet at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with Josef Eidenberger. He took further lessons from Laurie Frink, Ralph Alessi, Ellery Eskelin, Harold Mabern, Eric Alexander, Thomas Gansch, Klaus Schuhwerk and Frits Damrow, among others.

With the band Generations Unit he recorded a CD in 2011 under the direction and participation of Adrian Mears. He founded his trio Interzone (with Lukas Kranzelbinder and Herbert Pirker) that 2012 will be the first and in 2017 published his third album. He toured with him through Germany, Morocco, Mexico, China, Israel and North America. The trio also forms the core of Kranzelbinder's septet Shake Stew(Golden Fang, 2017), which has been one of the most important formations on the Austrian scene since it was founded in 2016. He also worked with Christoph Cech, Luis Bonilla,Michael Mantler, Harri Stojka, Dave Liebman, Harry Sokal, Andrej Prozorov, but also with the Janus Ensemble, Studio Dan, Memplex, Max Brand Ensemble, Jazzwerkstatt Wien or Nouvelle Cuisine. He can also be heard on albums by Fiva, Lia Pale and Harry Pepl. Kranzelbinder brought him to the SWR New Jazz Meeting in 2018 with Fiston Mwanza Mujila and the musicians Johannes Schleiermacher, Mona Matbou Riahi, Gregory Dargent and Dave Smith.

In November 2019 Mario Rom was appointed professor for jazz trumpet at the Institute for Jazz and Improvised Music at the Anton Bruckner Private University. In Erwin Wagenhofer's film But Beautiful - Nothing Exists Independently (2019), he is portrayed alongside Lucia Pulido and Kenny Werner."

"Born into a musical farm family in Northern Maine, Philip Yaeger learned to sing as soon as he could talk. At the age of ten he began playing the trombone, and soon discovered his first great love (in the inanimate sense): jazz. He attended William Paterson University, studying under Rufus Reid, Sy Johnson, Steve Turre, Conrad Herwig, and Ed Neumeister, (et al) and received a bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance in 1999. He subsequently moved to New York City, and later to Philadelphia.

In 2004 Yaeger relocated to Austria, where he annexed a master's degree at the Kunstuniversität Graz, studying (again) with Ed Neumeister and, briefly, the composer Georg Friedrich Haas, among other. He subsequently moved to Vienna, where he lives and works to this day.

Yaeger is active as a trombonist, composer/arranger, and occasional vocalist. His improbably wide range of experience includes pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz of all descriptions, electronica, and contemporary classical music both acoustic and electroacoustic. He has performed with such artists as Ari Hoenig, Max Nagl, David Murray, Uri Caine, Jon Sass, and Ursula Rucker, as well as Die Strottern, and the Vienna and Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestras. He serves as trombonist, house composer/arranger, and occasional bandleader for the Jazzorchester Vorarlberg. His debut album under his own name, Hunter, is available on JazzWerkstatt Records. He has performed at CBGB's, the Blue Note, Radio City Music Hall, Konzerthaus Wien, Theater an der Wien, Bregenz Festspielhaus, and at venues and festivals too numerous to count in North America, Europe, and the Near and Far East.

In recent years he's branched out: his sideline in language services - which began when an Austrian colleague asked him to translate a band bio - has turned into quite the cottage industry. Even more recently, he joined the IG Freie Musikschaffende, an advocacy group for freelance musicians, and was catapulted onto its executive board before he knew what hit him."

Margit Schoberleitner aka "Miss Maschó loves to play for and with children. Whether as a timpanist in a large orchestra, as a dancing goblin in Elfentanz and frippery or stomping as a workshop leader in schools, she has many opportunities to do so with the Tonkunstler Orchestra's sound plays.

Kendl Wolfgang is an Austrian drummer born in 1977 in Krems, Austra. He was educated at MUK - Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna (formerly: Konservatorium Privatuniversität Wien) Vienna where he studied jazz drums. He is known for Trio Boot and his work with Studio Dan.

Leo Riegler is an electronic artist, known for the groups Bintobone, JazzWerkstatt Wien, Koenigleopold, König Riegler, and his work with Studio Dan.

"Werner Angerer was born in St. Pölten, on June 15, 1980. He started his studies for sound engineering at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and passed the second diploma examination with distinction. The transition from studying to working as a self-employed sound engineer was smooth and since 2003, Werner Angerer has been in charge of the WUK-Sound Studios. He has made full use of this opportunity, actively contributing to the young music scene and realising numerous CD productions with musicians of his surroundings.

In March 2005, he played an important role in the organisation of the first festival of 'Jazzwerkstadt Wien'and he is still responsible for the sound design of most events and productions of this group.

Since 2004, Werner Angerer has been a permanent member of the live sound reinforcement crew of WUK events and has worked with numerous well-known national and international artists, both as monitor and FOH-engineer.

His numerous further activities as FOH-engineer are manifold and range from pop/rockbands to contemporary bigbands. Other examples for his numerous activities is his responsibility for the sound direction of Ensembles Studio Dan and Birgit Denk&Band.

2008 he founded the Acoustic Art Studios to make and work on high quality audio recordings. During his career he worked on more than 300 studioproductions, mainly in the field of acoustic music. Furthermore it always has been an important issue for him, working on various genres, because every mixdown benefits from the versatility of previous expierences."

"Daniel Riegler Ð Trombone, Composition. Born in 1977, Graz, Austria.

Works as a freelance trombonist, composer, ensemble director and producer of improvised, contemporary and jazz-related music. As a trombonist he regularly performs with the Klangforum Wien, as a composer and ensemble leader, he received commissions from renowned ensembles and institutions (21er Haus Wien, ensemble fŸr neue musik zŸrich, NDR Big Band, Jazz Festival Saalfelden É).

He co-founded the JazzWerkstatt Wien and works intensely as the artistic director of the self founded chamber ensemble Studio Dan. He has received numerous grants and awards (Staatsstipendium fŸr Komposition 2015, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik/Bestenliste 02/2010,É)

Furthermore, he works/ed, among others with Elliott Sharp, Vinko Globokar, Michel Doneda, Friedrich Cerha and the ensemble Òdie reiheÓ.

He lives with cellist Maiken Beer and his two children in Vienna.

"Michel Doneda (F) soprano saxophone, born in 1954, comes from the French South-West. He is a self-taught musician.

In 1980 he founded in Toulouse a reed trio: HIC ET NUNC, a group that toured quite a lot in France, playing mostly improvised music. At the same time he founded with musicians, dancers and actors a place called IREA (Institute for research and exchange between arts of improvisation).

In the following years, he participated in music projects with other artists and he became a regular guest of the Chantenay-Villedieu festival. Meeting other artists he developed a very personal approach with his music and his instrument in improvised music. During this period he played with Europeans musicians: Fred Van Hove, Phil Wachsmann, Max Eastley, Steve Beresford and Americans: John Zorn, Eliott Sharp, Elvin Jones

In 1985 he made his first record under his own name: TERRA (Nato record). At the same time he started playing regurlarly with Lê Quan Ninh, Daunik Lazro, Benat Achiary, Martine Altenburger, Barre Phillips, Paul Rogers, Tetsu Saitoh, Kazue Sawai. More recently he developed his work with Keith Rowe, Gunter Muller, Bhob Rainey, Giuseppe Ielasi and dancers as Masaki Iwana, Yukiko Nakamura, Valérie Métivier and poets, actors.

Since then, he has been very involved in the international improvised music scene, toured in Africa, Japan, Asia, USA, Canada, South America, Russia and with a lot of improvisers in Europe. In 1992 he founded in Toulouse with musicians, actors, poets, dancers the association: La Flibuste. As of today he recorded almost 50 records for European, Americans and Japanese labels."
