"Piano is an album of three pieces, "A Luca Marenzio ll', "Ma fin est mon commencement', and "Gebrechlichkeit', written by Slovak composer Adrian Democ between 2018 and 2023.

"Ma fin est mon commencement" and "Gebrechlichkeit" were written with three performance options in mind: specific instrumentation, open instrumentation with a similar quality of timbre and register, and a "monochromatic polyphonic" instrument, preferably the piano. "A Luca Marenzio ll" was originally written as "A Luca Marenzio" for three instruments, with cello (or viola da gamba) as the required instrument and the other two instruments flexible, and "A Luca Marenzio II" is the "well-tempered" counterpart to the original piece for solo piano.

Artist Biographies

"Adrian Demoč is a composer and occasional performer and improviser (fujara, piano). He studied with Martin Smolka, Frantisek Emmert, Doina Rotaru and Osvaldas Balakauskas in Brno, Bucharest and Vilnius.

In 2008, Adrian received the Leoš Janáček foundation prize and later continued his doctorate studies with Martin Smolka (his thesis "Spectral music and its perception of time" was published in 2012), obtaining a PhD.

In 2010 he was the head of the jury of the music discipline at NEU/NOW Nantes festival organized by ELIA European League of Institutes of the Arts. In 2011 he was the selected composer for the United Nations Youth Orchestra (Benasque, Spain) with his piece Three movements for string orchestra (2011).

Adrian's music has been performed so far in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Romania, Lithuania, France, Spain and USA. His music ranges from orchestral (Symphony, Zikkurat) and chamber music to conceptual scores (Chess) and multi-media performances (Bioprodukt)."

"As a pianist and a sixth-tone harmonium player, Miroslav Beinhauer (*1993) focuses on contemporary music and the music of the 20th century. In the role of soloist, he collaborated with composers such as Phill Niblock, Klaus Lang, Bernhard Lang, Georg Friedrich Haas, Marc Sabat or Petr Bakla, with festivals in Europe and in the USA like musikprotokoll, Sound Plasma Festival, Strings of Autumn, Ostrava Days, Moravian Autumn, Janáček Brno, Music Forum Hradec Králové, MusicOlomouc, MicroFest, Konvergencie or Gentse Feesten, and orchestras and ensembles including the PKF - Prague Philharmonia, Brno Philharmonic, Janacek Philharmonic Ostrava, Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra, Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra Olomouc, Brno Contemporary Orchestra, Opava Chamber Orchestra, Kubin Quartet, S.E.M. Ensemble, Prague Quiet Music Collective or String Noise. Notable performances include Piano concerto no. 2 by Magnus Lindberg (cond. by Heiko Mathias Förster), Piano concerto "Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes?" by John Adams (cond. by Andreas Sebastian Weiser) or Piano concerto by Esa-Pekka Salonen (cond. by Marko Ivanović). Sought-after chamber musician, Beinhauer is member of the international Ostravská Banda ensemble (collaboration with conductors such as Bruno Ferrandis, Johannes Kalitzke, Petr Kotík, Jiří Rožeň or Owen Underhill). Recently, he has been involved in numerous studio productions, including album recordings of piano music by Petr Bakla, Adrián Demoč or Milan Knížák and two album recordings of music for sixth-tone harmonium. Beinhauer also regularly records for the Czech Radio.

Miroslav Beinhauer is probably the only person in the world to master Alois Hába's sixth-tone harmonium. His involvement with the instrument began with taking part in the first ever performance of Hába´s sixth-tone opera Thy Kingdom Come, and continued with a recording of Hába's only solo work for the instrument, Six pieces for a sixth-tone harmonium op. 37. Since then, Beinhauer has encouraged new repertoire for this unique harmonium. As a result of his collaboration with several ensembles and festivals, composers Phill Niblock, Bernhard Lang, Georg Friedrich Haas, Klaus Lang, Marc Sabat, Gérard Pape, Arash Yazdani and others have created new pieces.

Miroslav Beinhauer studied at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno with Helena Weiser, as well as the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna with Jan Jiracek von Arnim, and the Royal Conservatory of Ghent with Daan Vandewalle."
