Reknowned Japanese sample/destroy band GROUND ZERO return with their new CD CONSUME RED, Part One of a 3CD concept entitled PROJECT CONSUME. Part Two will follow shortly after, and Part Three (a compilation of remixed versions of both Parts by diverse hands) will be available at the end of '97.
CONSUME RED hints at the beautiful chaos ahead. A work that is spiritually uplifting and terrifying as a single squalling blast from an ancient sounding horn is overlaid with a steadily building sound collage of sampled noise static, guitar overload, instrumental anarchy, and a drum duo who hammer home a beat that is subtly constructed yet relentless in its attack.
Those who marveled in awe at the sound of last year's Revolutionary Peking Opera
(ReR GZ1) will undoubtedly be equally blown away by this latest
assault. On CONSUME RED what initially comes over as a simple refrain
is transformed into a floorboard rippling epic that shocks, stuns and
elevates the imagination. A reverberation that goes beyond rock and
shakes itself free from the shackles of jazz pomp and intellectually
stylised improvisation. Climaxing with an incredible bout of
industrial feedback sampling from Otomo that all but drowns out the
original theme in its ferocity, this first section of PROJECT CONSUME
is the perfect opener for what will surely be regarded as one of the
year's major recorded highlights.
