Bent Spoon Trio: St. Paul Electric

Label: Bug Incision Records (bir-three)

Chris Dadge-drumset, percussion, recorder / David Laing-alto sax, melodica, laingdon / Scott Munro-upright bass, amplified things

"The new Bent Spoon Trio album takes a new approach from the last, this time working with small(er) track lengths. It was recorded in the smoking stairwell of ACAD, which, as anybody who's been in there knows, has insane amounts of sound to play with. The record ended up being a document of our afternoon there, and features improvisations, along with other tracks that help give a sense of the space we were working with. As with the other BUG INCISION albums, this release will feature some lucid [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

"The Boxhead Ensemble returns with their fourth proper studio album (fifth in sum) since the inception of the Dutch Harbor project in 1996. The collective's leader Michael Krassner (guitar/organ/FX) joins forces with Fred Lonberg-Holm (Vandermark 5, Terminal 4, Valentine Trio) on cello/harmonica, Frank Rosaly (drums) & Jacob Kolar (prepared piano), generating a meditative aura unlike any other. Label: ATAVISTIC (ALP 258CD)

Peter Brötzmann-alto, tenor, baritone saxophone, tarogato / Albert Mangelsdorff-trombone / Günter "Baby" Sommer-drums, horns

"I remember at one period when Han Bennink couldn't make the gigs - he was playing with Misha most of the time - Albert and I had a trio with Fred Van Hove, and we used to play in a little bar in Cologne which was run by the son of Päffgen brewery, a famous little brewery where Kölsch is brewed. It was equipped with an upright piano and a 20-liter barrel of fresh beer, which was empty after the gig.

Brennan, Wolf John: Pictures In A Gallery

Label: Leo (CD LR 464)

John Wolf Brennan-piano, prepared piano, arcopiano, e-piano, melodica

"The first solo piano CD by John Wolf Brennan in Leo Records catalogue. It's been recorded live in two different museums in Switzerland and Russia. 27 instant compositions have been inspired by the great paintings exhibited in these museums. As Stuart Broomer writes in his notes, John Wolf Brennan is blessed with a very quick mind, so his improvisations are always stretching to and from form to such an extent that we can readily confuse the spontaneous with the pre-formed. The CD is accompanied [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Label: ATAVISTIC (ALP 172CD)

Jason Stein-bass clarinet / Ken Vandermark-tenor, baritone saxophones, clarinet / Nate McBride-acoustic, electric bass / Tim Daisy-drums

"Given the logistical hiatus that Spaceways Inc. has found itself occupying, Ken Vandermark was seeking to create another mode of expression for those groove-centric hunks of sound..."

"Ergo: the birth of BRIDGE 61, featuring KV, Spaceways Inc. bassist Nate McBride, V5 trapman Tim Daisy, and newcomer Jason Stein on bass clarinet. With tunes crafted by these stalwarts, and dedications to This Heat, Jackson Pollock &Amp; Sonny Sharrock- how can Bridge 61 miss?" -Atavistic

Chadbourne, Eugene: Jesse Helms Busted With Pornography

Label: FireAnt (FA CD 1009)

Eugene Chadbourne / with members of the Violent Femmes / Camper Van Chadbourne / Jimmy Carl Black / Don Helms / Kenny Malone / The Legendary Stardust Cowboy / Lol Coxhill

Chadbourne subtitled this a "C&W Opera by Eugene Chadbourne," and it's presented as a song cycle of protest songs - originals and covers - along with a good dose of social commentary. As presented it's an avant-garde country opera meant to offend Senator Helms and his ilk, and Helm's smug image graces the cover. The music features members of the Violent Femmes, Don Helms, Jimmy Carl Black, and Lol Coxhill, working in Chadbourne's typically twisted and pointed musical world. Eugene Chadbourne-acoustic guitar

"Before Shockabilly, before the Downtown New York scene, there was a guy in Alberta playing very strange things on an acoustic guitar. This disc is a reissue of the classic and long out-of-print second solo LP by legendary guitar madman Eugene Chadbourne. Beautifully recorded, and mastered directly from the master tapes, Volume 2 is an essential document of Chadbourne's innovative prepared guitar playing. This disc contains live recordings from Europe and Canada further documenting the Clusone Trio's evolution. This recording was later licensed by Gramavision (which promptly deleted it from their catalog).

"Some modernists avoid the past in quest of the unheard; some postmodernists scrabble at historical references for want of anything original to say. "Together Chris Corsano and Paul Flaherty have re-written the concept of modern free-jazz with their post-hardcore punk style approach of euphoric togetherness. Ferocious, spontaneous, explosive and aggressively lyric they've established their groundbreaking duo with loads of shows and a host of tremendous recordings.

"I've mentioned before that Joe Fonda is ebullient and manages to maintain his charm even when he gets down to the serious nature of his music. Right from the first take of Bottoms Out it was clear that Joe was primed and the group in sync, from Gerry's busy hand drumming through the organic development of the ensemble lines into inspired forays and peaks. "This group has been together since 2000 (John Carlson joined in early 2003) and things have remained pretty much as they were when it recorded its first release in February 2001. Of course, the group is tighter and more conversant with the musical terrain, but the enthusiasm for Bill Gagliardi's music, the bemusement with his routines, and the frustration with the lack of live gigs has remained constant. "This straight-ahead guitar, bass, and trap drum trio is a delight in their understated pursuit of solid post-bop existentialism. Guitarist Sandro Gibellini has been nicknamed "The Arpeggiator in Italy" for his loose-wristed flying left hand, which tears chords apart for their melodic possibilities. "The PoBand in effect was born April 13, 1995 when the core group played a gig at Context Performance Space (NYC, NY) with guest Burton Greene. Lou sent me a tape of that performance and I produced it for Cadence Jazz Records (#1062).
