Thanks to all those who came out to the WFMU Record Collector's fair, a fun and unusual time was had by all! We're back to business, a good thing as many great releases are coming out as we get into the fall season.
In improvisation Peter Brotzmann and Fred Lonberg-Holm team up on the brain of a dog; Mats Gustafsson performs an incredible concert in Lithuania to start the NoBusiness label; the Huntsville trio with Ingar Zach issue their latest on Rune Gramoffon; Hans Tammen's extended Third Eye Orchestra on Innova is stocked; the great '77 Art Ensemble's "Les Stances A Sophie" soundtrack and the DVD release of the movie itself are reissued; we add Tony Malaby's excellent trio on Songlines; we marvel at the great Trio X 7-CD 2006 Tour box; and Tzadik releases Zorn's 21st Filmworks, and Zakaraya's latest.
In rock we have Pere Ubu's masterpiece Dub Housing's 30th anniversary remaster; No-Neck Blues Band's swirlingly bizarre Clomein; the song side of Arthur Russell; Mother Gong live in Amsterdam at the Unconventional Gong Gathering; Jon Larsen's "Jimmy Carl Black Story" (aside sad news of Jimmy Carl Black's passing on November 1); Kan Mikami and Furusawa on PSF; and Christina Carter's moody and intelligent songs on Kranky.
Experimental/electroacoustic releases bring NYC's bizarre Brown Wing Overdrive on Tzadik; Coh's Strings; and Keiji Haino's latest hurdy-gurdy release. Compositional releases find a remarkable Jon Cady modern opera; Mamoru Fujieda's latest plant patterns on Tzadik; and Mark Applebaum's Sock Monkey on Innova; plus John Tilbury's extensive book on Cornelius Cardew.
Several Sublime Frequency releases; Philip Jeck's Live in Liverpool LP; Honest Jon's eclectic collection of restored '78s from around the world on CD and double LP; Pakistan's last sarod player, Asad Qizilbash; and the infectious rhythms of legless African drummer Sidiki round out two great weeks of releases!
Last but not least, at the end of this mailing are 10 new reviews on The Squid's Ear.
