Squidco Staff Picks for 2017

Phil Zampino's Top 25 List for 2017
Carl Kruger's Top List for 2017

Phil Zampino's Top 25 for 2017

This year I've listed my top picks for 2017 in alphabetic order, so the position in the list does not suggest that any one release is "better" than any other. There are also a couple of December 2016 releases that weren't out long enough to be considered in last year's list, but which certainly deserved it. In 2017 we added roughly 525 titles to our catalog, so one way of looking at this list is to delcare them my top 5%. Given that most of the releases we carry are directly recommended or related to important labels or artists, it's somewhat of a crime to not include many more qualifying releases, but at that point the list would be effectively useless; needless to say, this was a very difficult list to compile.

Barbez w/ Velina Brown
For Those Who Came After: Songs Of Resistance From The Spanish Civil War
(Important Records)

New York's literate and genre-encompassing rock band Barbez led by guitarist and journalist Dan Kaufman present their 5th album, renderings of protest songs from The Spanish Civil War in a tribute to the Spanish International Brigades, blending avant-rock, contemporary classical, and folk music styles into a compelling and historically important set of songs.

Beins, Burkhard / Lucio Capece / Martin Kuchen / Paul Vogel

(Mikroton Recordings)

"Fracture Mechanics" is the scientific study of cracks in any material, an apt title from these European experimental innovators--Burkhard Beins, Lucio Capece, Martin Kuchen, and Paul Vogel--pulling back the curtain on process and creating an impressive album crossing acoustic and electronic improv, organized sound, and inexplicable interaction; recommended.

Butcher, John / Damon Smith / Weasel Walter

(Balance Point Acoustics)

A great trio of free improvising innovators--John Butcher on soprano and tenor sax, Damon Smith on double bass, field recordings and lloopp, and Weasel Walter on percussion--for a live set at 21 Grand Oakland in California, 5 improvisations with unexpected twists and turns, never overly agressive but always absorbing in their unique approach to their instruments.

(Fou Records)

Matching two distinct keyboards--Xavier Camarasa's piano with Jean-Marc Foussat's synthi AKS--two improvisers present two extended works roughly translating to "The Immensity of The Instincts" and "There, or all is water ...", contrasting between melodic and otherworldly sounds, a complex tapestry that guides and excites the listener in an unusual convergence.

Two extended examples of free improvisation from UK stalwarts, tenor saxophonist Paul Dunmall, bassist John Edwards, and drummer Mark Sanders, joined by New York pianist Matthew Shipp, all captured live at Cafe Oto in 2010; set one is an unflagging example of energetic collective improv, set two more introspective yet vital and demanding; a superb concert!

In Stock and Ready to Ship

We're never quite caught up with new releases that constantly come in our door, and we don't like to rush a release to our homepage. That said, the following releases have already been stocked at Squidco, and are able to be ordered. In most cases we have images, often have samples, and some basic description of each release.

• You can see the newest additions to our catalog in our Just In Stock Section.

• You can see the latest fully cataloged items in our store by using our New Releases section.

• You can see Recently Restocked items on this page.

• Ask to have us email you when Upcoming Releases are in stock.
