     Squidco & The Squid's Ear

UPDATE
May 3, 2019

"The first thing to say about improvising and composing
Is that the music emanates from the same body —
The brain and the heart (soul)
Working at the music in a totally committed way."
—Barry Guy

(Arjunamusic)

The 3rd album from the quartet of saxophonist Daniel Erdmann, drummer Samuel Rohrer, guitarist Frank Mobus and cellist Vincent Courtois, 10 "songs" that uses lyrical settings as a basis for avant soloing in compositions that find adept union points that yield to turbulence, billowing clouds that yield thunderous moments then clear to sophisticated tranquility.

Kanute (Bergstrom / Abildgaard / Okland): C.995
(Creative Sources)

Free improvisation from the Norwegian trio of Dorothea Okland (voice), Ferdinand Bergstrom (guitar), and Olav Abildgaard (percussion), in 7 non-idiomatic interactions of quirky dialog, Okland's fragmented language interacting with Abilgaard's quick, scrabbly approach to nonspecific objects and Bergstrom's acoustic guitar abstract progressions or chord structures; enjoyably odd.

     Buy      $15.95      Listen

Morishige, Yasumune / Yoko Ikeda / Takashi Masubuchi: Shade
(Meena)

A live recording of a concert at Ftarri in 2018, performed by Yasumune Morishige (cello), Yoko Ikeda (viola), and Takashi Masubuchi (guitar), three improvisers active mainly in Tokyo, in an entrancing confluence of strings building from delicate weaving of languorous tones with pizzicato interventions to an assertive second section, that then furtively dissolves; spellbinding.

Nakamura, Toshimaru / Ken Ikeda / Tomoyoshi Date: Ink on Paper
(Meena)

The second recorded collaboration of Japanese no-input mixing board player Toshimaru Nakamura with London-based electronic artist Ken Ikeda and Japanese sound artist Tomoyoshi Date, a large, rich and detailed work of slowly evolving sonic environments, showing masterful control in developing sumptuous sound and then subtly deflecting it with unusual excursions.

Rodrigues, / Leblanc / Ferreira Lopes: Montreal
(Creative Sources)

Named for the city in which it was recorded, the trio of Karoline Leblanc on harpsichord, Ernesto Rodrigues on viola, and Paulo J Ferreira Lopes on gongs & cymbals, is a mysterious and ritualistic album, Lopes' gongs slowly intoning as the strings use unusual techniques, much of the harpsichord played inside; a subtle and beautiful reflection of historic Montreal.

Rose, Simon / Steve Noble: North Sea Night
(Not Two)

Combining the work of 18 artists chosen to interpret a series of sacred rites that took place deep within the woods by an elite shaman of an Amazon tribe, including Squidco's own Carl Kruger & phil zampino, Cheval Gris (Ryan Lewis) weaves an incredible story in sound, a virtual soundtrack of rich aural environments, concrete elements, and ritualistic sound.

Owen, Ben : Turning
(Wind Measure Recordings)

     Buy      $11.95      Listen

Sugimoto, Taku / Minami Saeki: Songs [2 CDs]
(Ftarri)
