In 1982 Montreal multi-reedist & composer Jean Derome and guitarist & composer René Lussier presented a few duo concerts under the name Ambiances Magnétiques. Finding success in their pairing they expanded the concept, adding guitarist André Duchesne and clarinetist Robert Marcel Lepage to form a collective, along with Joane Hétu, Diane Labrosse, Danielle P. Roger, Michel F. Côté and Martin Tétreault. This collective formed the label of the same name, Ambiances Magnétiques, and also a Canadian new music distribution service called Dame.

One of the first labels Squidco added to its catalog in 2003 was Ambiances Magnétiques, and we've followed the label ever since. There must be something about the cold, long Canadian nights that makes the musicians on the label so fascinatingly creative among a diverse set of styles, whether it's improvised, composed, experimental or inexplicable music.
