Tuesday, July 4th is Independence Day, the US holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It's a day to observe and respect the principles of independent liberty and personal rights that are the cornerstones of modern culture. Now more than ever it's important to consider the intentions of those around the globe who have and who are struggling for personal freedom, and reflect on how me must continue to protect and secure those freedoms.

Freedom is also applied as a musical concept which has grown over the last two centuries, leading to remarkable new approaches in improvised and composed music, from free jazz to non-idiomatic improvisation, acoustic and electronic, and hybrids of compositional, experimental and improvised music.

This year we are celebrating from Friday June 30th to Sunday, July 2nd with the discounts listed above. This is the last across-the-board sale we're offering this summer, the remaining sales for the season will focus on labels, sets of albums, and Friends of Squid sales. So take advantage of these discounts, from now until Sunday, July 2nd!

   Jazz & Improvisation

Constellation Ensemble: Dove Morde La Teranta
(FMR)

Referencing the traditional dance of Salento named for the tarantula, this Italian 9-piece improvising ensemble spent several days developing the unique orchestration, melodies and themes of these eight pieces, recorded after the OSIMU festival held in Taviano, using an acousmatic recording device to optimize the details of their insightful and often biting conversations.

     Buy      $14.95      Listen

Costa, Carlo / John McCowen: Pianissimo Etc [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tripticks Tapes)

Powerfully rich sounds from two NY-based instrumentalists — John McCowen on contrabass clarinet & Carlo Costa on bass drum & percussion — in a three-part work of acoustic improvisations, McCowen sounding deceptively electronic through overtones and masterful harmonic technique, while Costa's bass drum provides deep foundations as he mysteriously layers percussive distractions; phenomenal!

Guerineau, Sylvian / Jean Rougier: Pensees
(Creative Sources)

Both members of the Didier Lasserre Trio, French double bassist Jean Rougier and legendary French free free jazz multi-reedist Sylvain Guerineau performing on tenor sax & bass clarinet, distill their work into a duo formation for six innately lyrical free improvisations, a beautiful complement to Guerineau's 2022 duo album with double bassist Fred Marty, Parodies.

Kuchen, Martin / Sophie Agnel: Detour Tunnels of Light
(thanatosis produktion)

Delicately caustic interactions of reeds, piano and percussion using the natural resonance of the Borlunda Church in Eslöv, Sweden, from the freely improvising duo of Martin Küchen and Sophie Agnel, Küchen adding electronics and Agnel performing inside and out of the piano while supplementing her palette with objects, both using space and patience as their allies.

     Buy      $15.95      Listen

Muller, Matthias / Pawel Doskocz / Emilio Gordoa: Aural Accidentals [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tripticks Tapes)

On the last day of the 2021 Spontaneous Music Festival at the Dragon Club in Poznań, Poland, the trio of Berlin trombonist Matthias Muller was joined by younger generation Polish guitarist Pawel Doskocz on prepared electric guitar and fellow Berlin drummer and electroacoustic improviser Emilio Gordoa for these two extended sonic adventures recorded in near-darkness.

(Creative Sources)

Eight free improvisations from the German duo of Markus Reineke on contrabass, bass recorder, objects & electronics, and Jukka-Pekka Kervinen on electric guitar, violin, virtual bass clarinet & electronics, creating an unusual language that merges electronics with acoustic instrumentation in quirky yet natural ways, each track named impressionistically.

Schindler, Udo / Peter Jacquemyn / Georg Karger: Hybride Synergetics [LowToneStudies]
(FMR)

Tamarisk: Plays A Word For Wind [CASSETTE]
(Astral Editions)

Recorded inside and using the resonance of a large grain silo at the Tablelands Center for Bio-Regional Art in Texas, the trio of vocalist Christina Carter (Charalambides), guitarist Andrew Weathers and bassist David Menestres recorded this haunting, swirling, long-form improvisation, a complement to their Waveform Alphabet release Plays a Word for Sun.

Trilla, Vasco: A Constellation of Anomaly
(thanatosis produktion)

Continuing his imaginative approach to percussion, Barcelona improviser Vasco Trilla's sixth solo album sees him expanding his rhythmic and tonal range through a fascinating collection of instruments, including bowed Russian flat bells, electrified music boxes, a zither processed through snare drums as resonators, Iranian round bells mixed with gamelan strips, &c.

Understated and enigmatic, the work of Northern Italian sound artist Edoardo Cammisa, aka Banished Pills, presents a very short work on decay, and then two expanded sound works composed from synthesisers, spring reverb, microphones, field recordings, no-input mixing, organ & sampler; the environments are murky but with movement, and engaging in their dark evening ambiance.

Weston, Matt: Embrace This Twilight (DOUBLE VINYL w/ DOWNLOAD)
(7272music)

Recent Reviews on The Squid's Ear

A sad moment was felt by free jazz fans last week upon hearing of the passing of saxophonist and multi-reedist, bandleader and European free jazz pioneer Peter Brötzmann. For me, certain musicians seem that they could never die, and I had placed Brötzmann in that category. Foremost because he always felt eternally young to me, despite his scruffy look; he was energetic, active, and was constantly releasing new and interesting material. Constantly evolving, his most recent albums showed an expanded sophistication to the music he had been releasing since his 1967 debut with Peter Kowald, For Adolphe Sax. I was taken by surprise, as were many.

Like many listeners, as a young man I found his earliest releases challenging and turbulent, and while I respected albums like Machine Gun, it was years before I understood, appreciated and could place Brötzmann's music in context. My lack of understanding had no relationship to the constant development Brötzmann showed, and it was for me to catch up with his innovations and his energy, and years to see the bigger picture of his artistic life. Thankfully by the time I started Squidco I had become, and remain, an enthusiast of his lifetime of accomplishment.

Over Squidco & The Squid's Ear's 20 years we have published a number of reviews of albums with Brötzmann's name in the lineup, and I list 11 of those reviews here in lieu of our usual list of recent reviews. Most of these albums are no longer in print, but the words of our writers can do more justice than anything I could say about this legendary musician, and I share those words with you again.

Rest in peace Peter Brötzmann, your legacy is assured and your music will endure for generations to come.
