"The foundations of a culture are solid when their folk traditions can handle being worked and reworked by multiple generations of composers. Szilard Mezei's latest efforts at mining archaic Hungarian folk music--this time specific tunes from various regions in Vojvodina--amply displays just how rich, forceful, diverse and accessible this music remains. The future is blessed to have such a present made out of such a past. The music that spans these two discs are marked by a distinct sense of ritual: taking music seriously as a necessarily humanitarian experience. Every note sings, every melody is an invitation, every improvisational burst rings heartfelt. Every time I listen I keep turning the volume higher and higher: I want to be engulfed by music like this, music that takes the experience of music seriously - seriously enough to play with, to take risks with, to push around and be pushed around by, with pleasure. I'm not an expert on these folk traditions, but the music is so welcoming that I feel like I become a part of them. Bouncing joviality, delicate blistering, torpid lumbering, somber tension, fluid twists and glorious verve - this music incorporates the lived range of honest emotional experience. When so much of modern culture insults the human experience, it's more than a relief - it's a blessing to find music that honors and respects its audience enough to give them the real aesthetic range that healthy emotional, social and philosophical vitality implies, and requires. This music is the soundtrack of humanitarian living rather than the usual overembelished dramatics of a culture intent on hyperinflating superficial trivialities. Gruff brass taunts courtly prancing vibes on "A mezobe a tucsok." Even when the lush and exquisite orchestration conjures fields waving in the wind, the presence of something astir and obscure lurks within. Here, there's no room for sentimentality: life is full of enough feeling without the need for sentimentalism. Thismusic cuts to the heart of that - the kaleidescopic depths within normal experience against the virtual infinity of dimensionless facades attempting to market lowest-common-denominator dumbing downs of human desires and dreams. "Cinegemadar" will get you mesmerized with loveliness, like being carried on a dolphin's back down a sinewy river, so smooth but still textured. "Megoltek egy legenyt" moves in one direction, but with curves. Ceremoniousness without bombast or staid platitudes. These foundations are rich, not stolid. When things get quiet mid-tune, you feel the tension, Csik's sticks riddling the air with foreshadowey presence. Berendika's flute pounces, then goes out on a limb. Every member of the eleven person ensemble also has a brief solo, each of which is interspersed between the compositionns. Mezei wants and needs each of the members of this ensemble to see themselves as soloists, and to develop a personal language within which to find both themsleves and this music.Mezei has always treasured showcasing the musicians he works with and writes for. You can hear that love in the lines he creates for them, the rigorous conductions he puts them through and most especially in how he invites them to make their own music within the context of this ancient music: giving them room to sanctify their own place. This recording is the fifth double-CD release invesitagting, invigorating and caring for Hungarian folk music by this ensemble, and they already have three more double CDs recorded for the same project. They are giving their lives to it, and that vitality is audible at every measure. I love this music and I can hear it loving me back.I love this music and I can hear it loving me back."-Andrew Choate, July 2024, Los Angeles
"This was an album launch concert, what kind of album is it?
Szilárd Mezei - Our fifth album, entitled Révészem, was released a few weeks ago, so this also became an occasion for the previously planned concert, which fulfilled the honorable invitation of the Kosztolányi Theater. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the theater and its management for the invitation, the very kind hospitality and the high-quality organization. We have also held several successful concerts with the band, including in Budapest, at Fonó and BMC, in Belgrade at the public radio studio six, in Magyarkanizsa, Kishegyes (at the Dombos Fest) and in Zenta.
These are excellent musicians. Who makes up the band?
Szilárd Mezei - We have played with the band members for many years and in several different formations. The permanent members are: Andrea Berendika - flute, alto flute, Bogdan Ranković - alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, Béla Burány - soprano and baritone saxophone, Tijana Stanković - violin, Ákos Keszég - violin, Branislav Aksin - trombone (he was replaced by István Szögi at the concert), Marina Džukljev - piano, Ivan Burka - vibraphone, marimba, Ervin Malina - double bass, István Csík - drums, percussion and myself - viola and vocals. The expanded orchestra occasionally features Svetlana Novaković on flutes, Margit Szvetnyik on violin, Zoltán Csányi on guitar and double bass, Predrag Okiljević on tenor saxophone, Kornél Pápista on tuba, Nemanja Mihailović on bassoon and Lazar Novkov on accordion. The majority of the musicians are from Vojvodina and Serbia, and a smaller part is from or lives in Hungary."-Magyar Szó
