"Portuguese bassist and composer Hugo Carvalhais doesn't stop to surprise us. After two internationally acclaimed albums with his piano (and synthesizer)-bass-drums trio complemented by guests like Tim Berne, Emile Parisien and Dominique Pifarely, here he comes again with something completely different, even if the French violinist is again involved.
Now, there's no drumset on sight, but we can't point it as a contemporary version of chamber music because of the electronics involved: Gabriel Pinto's keyboards and Jeremiah Cymerman's computer processing. There's an overall strangeness in this interpretation of the book trilogy "Valis", by science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick, but you also feel seduced by the dreamlike sound waves.
And in familiar terrain - after all, it's still jazz, it's still organic and it's still vibrant and full of humanity. The bass lines breath, giving us the impression that this music is a mix of living bodies. Everything is ambiguous here, from the omnipresent retro-futuristic organ chords to the either ethereal or grainy atmospheres. It's that paradoxical factor which keeps the mystery from start to end. When it does end you want to go to the beginning right after and solve your puzzlement, but you can't.

• Show Bio for Hugo Carvalhais "Hugo Carvalhais was born in Oporto/ Portugal and took a degree in Painting at the Fine Arts School there. Despite being self-taught, Carvalhais studied and participated in seminars with musicians including Ron Carter, Eddie Gomez, Hein Van de Geyn, Mario Pavone, Carlos Bica and Miroslav Vitous. Considered as one of the most talented and "sui generis" Portuguese double-bass players of his generation, Hugo has worked with musicians such as Julian Arguelles, Tim Berne, Emile Parisien, Dominique Pifarély, Liudas Mockunas, Sheila Jordan, Jefferey Davis, Art Themen, among others. 2010 sees the launch of his first record as a leader featuring saxophone player Tim Berne. "Nebulosa" was considered one of the best albums of the year by "Jazz.pt" magazine and received outstanding reviews by national and international press. The album was also chosen among the most representative records of Clean Feed label by their 10th anniversary. In 2012 Hugo Carvalhais releases is second album called "Particula" with his regular band mates ( Gabriel Pinto, Mário Costa ) and the participation of Dominique Pifarély and Emile Parisien. He began studying music at the age of nine, and from the age of 17 he began to focus on listening to progressive and psychedelic rock from the 70's and avant-garde composers from the 20th century. At the age of 18 he entered the Conservatory of Music of Porto to study classical piano and there he had his first contact with jazz. He participated in workshops and seminars with musicians such as Mario Rossi, Mário Laginha, George Colligan, Don Byron, Cecil Bridgewater, among others. He made his recording debut with the CD Nebulosa by Hugo Carvalhais (Clean Feed). Active since the early 2000s "the protean composer and improviser has made an indelible mark on NYC's DIY avant scene" writes the Brooklyn Observer. His recorded output, with multiple releases on Tzadik and his own 5049 Records, ranging from albums for solo clarinet, creative orchestra, amplified string quartet and acoustic improvisation, has been described by the Wire as "blown out studio creations that merge extended reed techniques with the crushing, airless sonics of black metal." Developing a formidable reputation as a clarinetist "he has an approach that is uniquely his own, a kind of passionate and relentless search for meaningful sound, or sound creation in the broadest sense. His instrument, often electronically supported, is only a tool to achieve this, and paradoxically, by doing so, he also changes the possibilities of his instrument itself." writes Stef Gijssels of the Free Jazz Blog. With concerts in over twenty five countries, collaborators of note have included Evan Parker, Nate Wooley, Toby Driver, Brian Chase, Christopher Hoffman, Charlie Looker, Mario Diaz de Leon and Peter Evans. As an audio engineer, he has recorded and mixed dozens of albums for underground labels such as Tzadik, psi, Clean Feed, Intakt and Important. In addition to his musical output, since 2013 he has produced the popular 5049 Podcast, a weekly program of long-form conversations with many of contemporary music's most vital and daring artists. The podcast, with new episodes every Monday, has been praised for its ability to present musicians in engaging, honest, unpretentious and often humorous conversations, revealing deep insights into the minds and working methods of those involved. To date he has presented over 200 episodes of long form conversations with artists such as Oren Ambarchi, Susie Ibarra, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Craig Taborn, MV Carbon, Trey Spruance, Ken Vandermark and hundreds more." ^ Hide Bio for Jeremiah Cymerman • Show Bio for Dominique Pifarely "Dominique Pifarély modernized jazz violin, combining extraordinary technical skills with an inclusive idea of music-making. He has been soon very in-demand as a straight jazz player, but was soon in some of the more adventurous groups in Europe, too, including Mike Westbrook's band (On Dukes' Birthday, hatART) and the Vienna Art Orchestra. In 1979, he began touring with bassist Didier Levallet and guitarist Gérard Marais as a trio. In the 1980s he began leading his own bands, as can be heard on 2 records, Insula Dulcamara (1988) et Oblique (1992). In 1985, Pifarély started to work with reedist Louis Sclavis and in 1992, they formed the Sclavis/Pifarély Acoustic Quartet, featuring guitarist Marc Ducret and bassist Bruno Chevillon, and recorded for ECM. In the late 1990s, he started a duo work with pianist François Couturier, and they recorded a prominent album (Poros, ECM, 1997). In the 2000's, Dominique Pifarély leads different personal projects. Impromptu is a development of the collaboration with François Couturier, adding counter tenor Dominique Visse and a work on contemporary poetry. He initiated numerous text/music experiences with french writer François Bon and actors Violaine Schwartz and Pierre Baux. The Dédales Ensemble is a acoustic nine piece band. He founded in 2007 a trio with keyboard player Julien Padovani and drummer Eric Groleau, and the Dédales Ensemble ("Time Geography", Poros éditions, 2013), played in duo with Michele Rabbia or Vincent Courtois, In his mature style, the classical violin tradition and the swing lessons combine with a contemporary European sonic exploration ; his technical mastery and quick imagination allow him to move seamlessly between these worlds. Dominique Pifarély created in 2014 a new quartet with Antonin Rayon on piano, Bruno Chevillon on double bass and François Merville on drums ("Tracé provisoire", ECM, 2016), and gives solo recitals. Then he is part, since 2015, of the collaborative trio Sclavis/Pifarély/Courtois ("Asian fields variations", ECM, 2017).
