Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"A fascinating double album made of two concert recordings at the WIM in Zurich and the Kunsthalle in Lucerne.

Urs Leimgruber is a saxophonist (soprano and tenor), a researcher of sounds and timbres who flies into the atmosphere in a lucid, introverted, candid, suddenly expressionist, pure... One of the most inventive colleagues of Evan Parker, John Butcher and Michel Doneda who has nothing to envy anyone and especially that gives us to hear the surprise, beyond the facilities, propriety, virtuosity displayed. In the first place the requirement, the faith and this passion of musical moment nourished thousands of patient hours to explore the recesses of the jar, the pipe and the beak of the saxophone right, its interior space, its vibration, the pressure of the lips, the song of the reed in complete freedom. But whatever the intrinsic qualities and the potential of an improviser, they find their final result when in the company of a "compatible" or unpredictable partner, one goes in search of absolute. Where the music of the one enriches that of the other and the two melee us unveil unsuspected perspectives, an enrichment made of unlimited generosity, exposed unconscious, dilated time of which the captivated listener instantly forgets the duration. Where the sounds are metamorphosed to those of the partner.

Jean Marc Foussat has been handling the AKS synth for decades and has built a multiform, reptilian language, made of winds, bursts, heavy clouds, unpredictable currents, crazy loops. In recent years, he has rubbed shoulders with many partners looking for the right formula, the winning team that can contribute to the flourishing of his research. Just recently, I applauded a wonderful trio album with Matthias Muller and Nicolas Souchal. Today, I have the strong feeling to have in hand the nugget that will stay for a very long time in the shelving favorites of my cehtheque, those that we keep close at hand to taste the details and gauge the quintessence, their evidence at every moment when we listen to them.

Floating and twirling around and over the sound treatments of J-M.F., Urs plays the registers initimes, unknown, discovered in the moment of his saxophone, passing from the murmur of the breath caressing the column of air to the saturated and unheard of the most biting harmonic in the same jet. He projects the unspeakable, the despair that suddenly reveals itself to be a conviction, streaking the space of the cry of his upset guts or the worried tremors of the column of air. Organic stresses from which the melody is evacuated leaving room for wild sounds returned to the state of nature. An undomesticated music where the artist allows to speak and live the sounds made possible by the mechanical way of the keys, buffers, orifices, pipe, beak, reed, ligature and the action of the body and the soul. The blower lets himself be guided by what he hears himself play and is caught in the snapshot of his action like a celestial body in a black hole projecting pigments and welts on the screen of life. All our perception of this phenomenon is sublimated by the flows, eruptions, flows produced by the other, the one who manipulates his synth, by holding back, compressing the flow, stretching the halos, causing him delays and jolts.

This is undoubtedly a unique document that, high level of electronics, joins the best recorded moments of Thomas Lehn, Richard Scott, Furt, Lawrence Casserley... and evokes the best of the world the spirit of the legendary Saxophones Solos by Evan Parker in 1975 (a / k / a Aerobatics Incus 19). Comrades fascinated by the improvised adventures of saxophonists such as Evan Parker, John Butcher, Michel Doneda, Roscoe Mitchell, Joe McPhee, Stefan Keune, Mats Gustafsson etc... it is inconceivable that we can avoid listening to such an improviser. His solo albums (# 12, Chicagos Solos / Leo) are an excellent introduction and those with Barre Phillips and Jacques Demierre the best business card for his group work (LDP - Cologne / Psi, Albeit and Montreuil / Jazzwerkstatt). In this duet engraved for Jean Marc Foussat's label, Urs Leimgruber draws magical lines, incandescent glyphs, pure poetry, the language of the heart. The component of both worlds is sublime. To listen without a hitch!"-Fou Record (via Google Translator)
