After a long break from their last recording, the long-lasting (since 1977!) BassDrumBone trio of Mark Helias on bass, Gerry Hemingway on drum and Ray Anderson on trombone came together for a packed 2023 concert at Zurcher Gallery, the enthusiasm resonating into this studio session days later as the trio recorded a mix of collective improvisations and one composition from each.

Recorded at the Samurai Hotel, in Astoria, New York, on July 3rd, 2023, by David Stoller.
"A few days before recording this CD at Samurai Hotel recording studio in Astoria, NY in 2023, we had performed at the Zurcher Gallery in New York City. This followed a three day retreat in Long Island at the home of Ray Anderson and his wife Suzy. We spent time there practicing an entirely new repertoire of pieces as we had done throughout our many years as BassDrumBone; reconnecting after the passing of some time, each bringing compositions that marked our musical explorations since we had last convened. It is a process; negotiating our unique ways of writing music for each other, including plenty of banter and laughter as we navigate our way through these sometimes thorny themes. This time we had only one performance in NYC with no chance to explore the dimensions of the new pieces in the interactive domain of touring and performance. As usual the new compositions served as vehicles for "in the moment" creation, revisiting the chemistry that first clicked so naturally in 1977.
In this new chapter, we all felt inclined to lean into our collective invention, rather than our writing, and so the program for the Zurcher Gallery was left open, to see where our shared music would lead us.
Meanwhile we had rented the Gallery for this performance and sent out a mailing hoping that we would get a reasonable audience for the gig. In the world of self-produced concerts there are no guarantees and despite our history and remarkable longevity we had not been very active in recent times due to geographical separation and disparate career paths. Prior to the concert we really wondered if we would even break even on our rental fee.
On the evening of the performance something quite magical occurred; a line of people formed outside the venue. Among the three of us we knew a high percentage of those who walked through that door to hear this performance. Chairs had to be unearthed from storage so everyone could have a seat. It was crowded in the best way possible. When we finally arrived on stage to invent an hour of music, the applause was overwhelming, heartfelt and very emotional. It felt like a shared moment of celebration; an acknowledgement that we are all still here and life goes on despite the many challenges that come with time.
Days later, with the inspired concert experience resonating in each of us, we explored our process of open form group improvisation in the quite different atmosphere of the recording studio. In addition to the improvised pieces we recorded three of the new pieces; one from each of us. We set out to achieve a balance between improvised and composed tunes. Not long from now, in 2027, we will have our 50th anniversary and we hope to see you again when that time comes. Meanwhile, thank you for listening."-Auricle
