Sery, Christelle / Jerome Descamps: Te Ti'ama (Clean Feed)

Translating to freedom, Te Ti'ama is the duo of French trombonist Jérôme Descamps and guitarist Christelle Séry, heard in eleven succinct improvisations that create a unique vocabulary of both active and spacious dialog, from pointillistic energy to introspective rumination, both improvisers favoring peculiar sonic events and techniques for moments of humor and awe.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Enigmatic and deeply emblematic, a sensitive dialogue unbound by predetermined roles, Te Ti'ama announces the opportune arrival of an exciting new duo defining an undocumented path in guitar-trombone dynamics. While taking obvious inspiration from trailblazers ranging from Jim Hall and J.J. Johnson, Joe Pass and Bob Brookmeyer to, more recently, Marc Ducret and Samuel Blaser, this extraordinary debut by the French dyad of Christelle Sery and Jerome Descamps thrusts a curious format into even bolder dominions. Primed by attentive listening, patience, congruent techniques and mutual understanding, Te Ti'ama (which, entirely appropriately, translates as 'free', or 'freedom') finds the pair instigating a phantasmal seance haunted by the convolutions of a myriad harmolodic ghosts.

Descamps billows in a bizarre syntax laced with languid moans, insectoid buzz and crepuscular flutter, his 'bone occasionally wailing in the anguished cry of a wounded sea leviathan, before breaking into a series of doleful blues refrains, the emotive detritus of a New Orleans heartbreak, as Sery alternates between serrated nerve-janglers, finger-tapping bleed, seriously-phased volume-shift theory and some jolting bottleneck recalling Ry Cooder's slide-heavy work on the Southern Comfort soundtrack.Space operates throughout as a silent partner, with tones and timbres filtering down to shadow and suggestions of form. Moments of tranquil beauty teeter on broiling sabotage, imaging the dormant volcanic foundations of the idyllic island of Tahiti, where these sessions were recorded. On Te Ti'ama, Sery and Descamps have realised a remarkable nexus, a remote outpost of daring improvisation where squelched rasps, kookaburra whoops and wordless curses provide the surprise foundations for a dying star's lingering shimmer."-Clean Feed

Artist Biographies

Christelle Séry - guitars, musician active in creative music.

"Being classically trained, she constantly opens the boundaries between written, oral, acoustic and electrical practices.

Interpreter and improviser, her instrumental approach is particularly sensitive to the relationship between gesture and timbre.

Appreciated for her experience in ensemble and orchestra (Cairn, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Extended Miroirs, Accroche Note), she also passionately develops solo work as retracing her acoustic pages, Ave Golondrina, Electric pages.

She participated in the main events dedicated to creation in France, Switzerland, Austria, Taiwan, Japan, China and the United States.

Her taste for live performance led him to regularly rub shoulders with theatre, poetry, dance, circus, video and performance. Faithful accomplice of the Co. A force to dream, she notably realizes the music of the last show: Maria and her six or seven children.

She was heard in Doux Mix, Journal d'une apparition, in duet with Raymond Boni, in trio with Frédéric Maurin and Pierre Durand, in the bands of Serge Adam, Christophe Rocher, Laurent Dehors, Françoise Toullec.

She formed the burning deo Deity with singer Geraldine Keller and was part of the Spat'sonore, the Nautilis ensemble, the Octet Cabaret/Rocher. She starred in Dracula, the first young public show of the ONJ (ed. F. Maurin).

She regularly participates in the performances proposed by Nicolas Frize: Soufflé, She flows, Impressions... to be, and recently Barthes Performance at the Centre Pompidou.

She is currently working on several creations in various contexts: Songs Contre. (Ensemble XXI.n), Moger Orchestra - from which she participated in the arrangements, L'Aimée de Alvaro Martinez Leon, Hidden Artikulations (The Nocturne Archipelago and Cie Distortions).
