Artist Biographies

"Joon-Yong Choi formed the first noise project in Korea, Astronoise, in 1996 with Chulki Hong and has been exploring the amplification and physical properties of sound. It mainly works to expose the underlying sound from the operating mechanism by using errors such as CD players, MP3 players, open reel tape recorders, VCRs, and speakers that are no longer in use. Recently, he is conducting a performance that raises doubts about the perception and inferiority of the sound that occurs between the space and the listening act, and is interested in the control and failure of the performance obtained through improvisation or composition. Since 2003, she has participated in improvised music performances, Starfish and RELAY, and has collaborated with domestic and foreign writers. As a solo, she released five albums, including DANTHRAX, made using the malfunction of a CD player. Since 2000, he has been in charge of designing and producing albums at the label Balloon & Needle, introducing domestic experimental music to overseas. In addition, he is playing bass in'Vomit & Tear', a Doom metal band formed with SklavenTanz members."

"Devin DiSanto lives in brooklyn and develops performances, actions, and audio recordings that revolve primarily around the material attributes of a sound, particularly the plurality of its signification. His projects start from the premise that space is listened for as much as seen and heard before it comes into view. It doesn't arise from the visible-readable realm but is first heard, listened to, and enacted through physical gestures and movements. He often performs solo but prefers to bind himself to collective projects bypassing the private sphere of his own interests. He seeks to emphasize determinacy rather than indeterminacy, critique rather than ambivalence, and decision rather than indecision in order to develop social relations and action oriented values capable of questioning the apparent 'neutral', 'objective', fixed, transparent, innocent or indifferent representation of a space. These sound-producing tasks don't need to generate musical sound or even produce audible sound in creating performances, but instead search for a distorting effect produced by signifying material, and the possibilities inherent in the slippage between society and language."

Baron, Marc / Mark Vernon
post-chance
(erstwhile)
Mailing unspooled 1/4" tape to each other along with a magnet to randomly erase part of each tape, Marc Baron & Mark Vernon captured these fragments and placed them into sequence based on the minute past the hour each was originally recorded, contrasting the degraded recordings with the original; an exacting but fascinating method of creating something unexpected and uniquely engaging.
Darge, Moniek / Vanessa Rossetto
Dream Soundies
(erstwhile)
Bringing together two generations of sound artists and field recording specialists--Belgian composer Moniek Darge, known for her ethnomusicologist "soundies" from global locations; and American sound composer Vanessa Rossetto transforming everyday occurrence--for a meeting at Lincoln Center in NYC to record the city and reshape its sound into four impressionistic sonic reveries.

Floating By
(erstwhile)
Wandelweiser founder and composer Antoine Beuguer and French composer Anastassis Philippakopoulos in a work for voice (Philippakopoulos) and breath (Beuguer), employing spaces of silence against utterance and sibilant expression, a patiently developing work that floats by in deceptively simple ways, captivating through each articulation that seems perfectly placed.
de Asis, Clara / Ryoko Akama
Sisbiosis
(erstwhile)
Engrossing interactions of electronic sound, abstract percussion, static, metallic ringing and other ephemeral sonic assertions, from French-based Spanish sound artist Clara de Asís and UK-based Japanese-Korean installation & sound artist Ryoko Akama: three tracks of live electroacoustic improvisation, and three compositions extracted from those sessions.
Marhaug, Lasse / Jerome Noetinger
Top
(erstwhile)
A tribute to late experimental sound artist Peter Rehberg (Pita) from collaborators and friends Lasse Marhaug and Jérôme Noetinger, ten recordings of wildly creative, slippery electronics, crunching sound bunts, rapid fire electronic turmoil and tapehead jamming, ending with a beautifully drifting tribute to an artist who widely influenced modern sound culture.
Jun, Yan / Zhu Wenbo
Twice
(erstwhile)
Beijing sound artists Yan Jun and Zhu Wenbo developed this hour-long sound composition from independent recordings, a set of abstractions through recordings in the field, mechanical and electronic devices, human voice and utterance, acoustic and electronic instruments, &c. &c., made cohesive and compelling through independent time assignments by each artist; inexplicably interesting.
Dulin, Tucker / Ben Owen
Cat Guarding Geese
(erstwhile)
An electroacoustic composition of environment & sound punctuated with subtle percussion and electronic interventions, developed from field recordings, performances on Roosevelt Island, and studio recordings in Brooklyn by the duo of Tucker Dulin on bells, bowl, can, cymbal, lentils, mallet & whistle and Ben Owen on paper mic, speaker boxes, op amps & cassette.
Tsunoda, Toshiya / Taku Unami
Wovenland 2 [2 CDs]
(erstwhile)
For their 2nd collaboration, sound artists Toshiya Tsunoda & Taku Unami present a series of acoustic experiments, each track using a single field recording — fishing spots, birds, a hiking trail, &c, — recording and manipulating those recordings using specific processes, seeking to emulate the way our minds process the senses that we encounter to create our perceived reality.

Frey, Jurg / Radu Malfatti
