AHC (Alexander Cooper): Lase [2 CDs] (Bu Lang Tribute Cake)

A meditative and immersive work of sonic abstraction, Alexander Cooper's first solo release in eight years unfolds as a lattice of minimalism-inspired harmonic diffusion, where shifting textures and fluid structures dissolve into ethereal, non-representational spaces, blurring the boundaries between form and perception in a dynamic interplay of sound and air.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Lase is concentrated diffusions of lace, lattice, continuous threads and patterns. The edges of attention sharpen and soften. Harmonic materials derived from minimalism, as light or gas, emanate through abstracted spaces only resembling air.

"Imaging landing sites can also, in response to an indeterminate probable existent, simply come forward as a portion of sited awareness that remains diffuse, thus presenting areas of world without mimicking anything at all; to demonstrate this look off into thin air. A dimensionalizing landing site lands simultaneously narrowly and tightly and widely and diffusely, combining the qualities of a perceptual landing site with those of an imaging one, coupling and coordinating direct responses with indirect ones, the formed with the formless."-Gins, M., & Arakawa, S. (2002). Architectural Body. University of Alabama Press.

Fennesz
Mosaic
(Touch)
Working in his new Seven Fountains studio in Vienna, guitarist and sound artist Fennesz developed these six works as a "mosaic" of elements derived from improvisation, composition and experimentation using unexpected influences and time signatures, each piece a richly immersive environment of bright harmonics with turns into intricately shadowed space.
DNS
Taking Big Bites Of The Khandas Three Cafes Deep [2 CDs]
(Bu Lang Tribute Cake)
Live improvisations from the North Carolina duo of Alexander Cooper and Joseph Schlam, a double album of eight extended journeys through textural sound, drone and veiled reference, influenced by Costin Miereanu, Jaap Vink, Lionel Marchetti, Luc Ferrari, and Dagar Vani, as the duo work in stereo using two amps for drums, voice, live electronics, and field recordings.
Haco
Another Souvenir: Solo Live in 2002
(Ftarri)
After Dinner vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and sound artist Haco undertook her first North American tour in 2002, bringing with her an irregularly tuned electric mandolin, two samplers, a mini-drum synth and her "Howling [tea]Pot" feedback instrument, here in seven uniquely Haco performances of sonic instrumentals and song, performed at Mama Gaia's in Cambridge.
Innovative Landscapes Laboratory
Spontaneous Dimensions
(Sublime Retreat)
Ukrainian composer Taras Opanasiuk explores spontaneous soundscapes, blending free improvisation with a meticulous compositional process as he transforms modular synthesizer sessions into five compelling sound collages that balance atmospheric electronics, musique concrète, and studio layering, in an imaginative and introspective journey through Opanasiuk's unique sonic palette.
Merce, Sergio
Prosa
(Hitorri)
Buenos Aires sound artist & saxophonist Sergio Merce presents his third album on the Hitorri label, in two pieces recorded between 2023-24: "Segundo Paisaje", an organized composition using wind synthesizer, virtual instruments & field recordings; and "Glissotar" using a new wind instrument designed for extreme glissando effects, joined with wind synth & electronics.
Lyle, Erica Dawn
Colonial Motels [CASSETTE + DOWNLOAD]
(Notice Recordings)
The former touring guitarist for Bikini Kill, who has also worked with The Raincoats and Kim Gordon, in a 2-part solo work of experimental approaches to the electric guitar, starting with minimal loops that slowly layer in intensity until reaching a climactic release and dispersal, picked up again in the second part for a unique work of noise and alien guitar soloing.
CHANGES TO blind
Volume Eight: Before Birth to Expiration9
(Squidco Records)
The eighth album from the long-running CHANGES TO blind project of Phil Zampino, eight works drawing on compositions & improvisations, acoustic & synthetic instruments, field recordings & samples, with guests Levi Erik providing field recordings & voice and Wilmington, NC's 910 Noise Members of Carl Kruger, subterrene, John Bishop, Authorless and Ryan Lewis.
Nakamura, Toshimaru
No Input Mixing Board 11 - Live In Tokyo
(Input Error)
Four live recordings from Tokyo performances during 2021 & 2022 by No-Input Mixing Board performer Toshimaru Nakamura, the 11th in his series of albums featuring his unique approach to cross-wiring a mixer to harness the unexpected (and manufacturer's ill-advised) sounds of feedback & distortion, structuring the results into surprising and riveting sonic soundscapes.
Onda, Aki
Brisbane September 25 2004 (CASSETTE)
(Room40)
As part of a 2004 performance series at Fabrique in Brisbane, Australia, Lawrence English invited experimental cassette and field recording artrist Aki Onda to present his unique approach to reusing and rupturing recordings using cassettes, Walkmans, delay pedals and fender twin amps, improvising this extended work & its coda, blurring concrete and inexplicable sources in remarkable ways.
Lopes, Luis
Lisbon Paris, Stereo Noise Solo
(Shhpuma)
Taking advantage of stereo placement and strong effect processing, Portuguese guitarist Luís Lopes (Humanization 4tet, Lisbon Freedom Unit) releases the antithesis of his recent Love Songs series with this improvised guitar album, splitting his signal through two unique sequences of analogue pedals into tube amplifiers, creating hypnotically corrosive music.
Myers, David Lee
Frontier
(pulsewidth)
A live set of electronic recordings from New York sound explorer David Lee Myers, aka Arcane Device, using modular synths under masterful control to create coherent excursions into territories both terrestrial and cosmic, each piece carefully evolving without histrionics or overt noise through warmly vivid and uniquely diverse works of sound.
Liberatore, Matteo
Lacquer
(Tripticks Tapes)
A series of concise noise explorations from Italian-born, Brooklyn-based guitarist Matteo Liberatore, more typically heard in composed and improv/experimental forms including work with Elliott Sharp & Weasel Walter, here in an assertive album of guitar-driven analog synthesis & noise using unusual structures, alien utterances and intense twists and turns.
Zetterberg, Torbjorn (Zetterberg / Agnas / Hogberg)
Opinions [VINYL]
(Corbett vs. Dempsey)
Known as a jazz bassist, Torbjörn Zetterberg mostly steps away from the big strings for a series of multitrack studio compositions on a variety of instruments electronic & acoustic, plus samples and voice, all performed by Zetterberg himself (with Konrad Agnas and Anna Hogberg adding input on a couple of tracks); powerful, urgent, impressive works from a truly well-rounded musician.
Comte, Richard
Endless Tapes [CASSETTE]
(nunc.)
An immersive drone performed on acoustic guitar, captured and extended through loops and effects and recorded to 4-track cassette, from French improviser Richard Comte (Hippie Diktat, Vegan Dallas), a single extended piece that begins with actively repeating chords that evolve into rich layers of textured, expansive loops, a seemingly infinite work that begs to be looped.
Guthrie, Will
People Pleaser 2 [VINYL]
(Kythibong)
Impressive experimental approaches to organized recordings of rhythmic and melodic percussion, a mix of quirky and curious samples & loops, spoken word, field recordings and inexplicable origins, captivating the listener in concise and diverse expositions and dynamic pacing, a journey in "pleasingly" upbeat passages and moments of awe and contemplation.
