Recorded live at Cossoul, in Lisbon, Portugal, during Reverso Festival, on September 27th 2024, by Carlos Santos.
Spleen is a live recording capturing the improvisational synergy of three stalwarts of the Portuguese avant-garde scene: violinist Carlos Zíngaro, violist Ernesto Rodrigues, and flutist/piccolo player Carlos Bechegas. Recorded on September 27, 2024, at Cossoul in Lisbon during the Reverso Festival, this performance showcases the trio's deep commitment to spontaneous composition and textural exploration.
Zíngaro, a pioneer in free improvisation with a career spanning over five decades, brings his extensive experience in both classical and experimental music to the ensemble. Rodrigues, known for his innovative use of the viola and the crackle box — a unique electronic instrument — adds layers of sonic complexity, reflecting his background in free jazz and contemporary classical music. Bechegas, with his roots in jazz and electro-acoustic experimentation, contributes a diverse palette of flute and piccolo timbres.
The album unfolds as a series of abstract dialogues, where melodic fragments and extended techniques coalesce into a cohesive narrative, embodying the essence of real-time musical creation.
