111 (Michelle / Villamil): Live at Opus 40 [CASSETTE] (Notice Recordings)

The duo of Chantal Michelle and Grace Villamil transform the monumental land sculpture of Opus 40 into a resonant instrument, layering voice and electronics with field recordings and audience interactions to create an immersive, spatially dynamic performance of ambient tension and sonic obliteration, masterfully teetering between composed sound, environmental resonance, and blooming noise.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"⎤⎤⎤, the duo of Chantal Michelle and Grace Villamil, are interested in what they term 'sound obliteration'Ña paradoxical process that, in their hands, reveals teeming masses of sonic detail. The pair works in a variety of modes, including composition, installation, and performance."

"Live at Opus 40 begins with machinic drones that expand and dissolve into the warm, open-air environment where it was recorded, initially anchored by the site's rock formations. The piece is constructed from eight distinct recordings of a live performance at Opus 40, an expansive land sculpture in upstate New York. Each field recording offers a unique spatial and acoustic perspective."

"In addition, microphones and various instruments were placed throughout the site, inviting audience members to interact with themÑtheir playing captured, processed, and reintroduced into the evolving soundscape. The duo cultivates a high degree of ambient tension, creating a condition where electronics and objects situate around a central soundÑcircling, overwhelming, and ultimately transforming it."

"This approach reflects a deep attentiveness, trust, and an embrace of risk as the performance continuously evolves. The result is a work that remains uncannily musical and cathartic, teetering between composition and documentation while constantly threatening to bloom into gales of noise." -Notice Recordings

Artist Biographies

"Chantal Michelle is a composer and interdisciplinary artist whose work engages with the spatial and tactile properties of sound. Her practice incorporates feedback systems, multi-channel speaker arrangements, and psychoacoustic phenomena to explore the relationship between sound, perception, and physical space. She is interested in the fragility of perception and its ability to be altered, disrupted, or reconstructed. Her projects include site-responsive installations, hand-blown glass instruments, conceptual scores, and recorded material.

Michelle's work has been presented internationally at venues and festivals including Fridman Gallery (US), Cafe OTO (UK), MUTEK (MX), and Het HEM (NL). Her discography includes a forthcoming LP on Shelter Press, alongside previous releases on Dinzu Artefacts, Warm Winters Ltd., and Somewhere Press. She has collaborated with musicians Lea Bertucci and Patrick Shiroishi, contributed music to the films of Laura Huertas Millán, and is currently developing an album and a book of poetry with writer and visual artist Funto Omojola. She is also one half of the experimental noise project ⎤⎤⎤, with releases on Superpang and Notice Recordings. Her work has been supported by grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (US), the Sonic Arts Research Unit (UK), and the Feminist Center for Creative Work (US). "Grace Villamil is an interdisciplinary artist based in NJ & NY. Through sound, performance, video & material her works concern the personal history and physicality of embodied sound and its phenomena. Creating regenerative systems, along with themes related to noise, play, ancestral excavation, and temporality constitute the core of her practice.

Current projects include mumulak; Interaural Space, a community installation turned radio show on WPRB centered on noise, migration & oral histories; ⎤⎤⎤with Chantal Michelle & Drab. Her process merges many worlds: basketball as instrument; sculptural mylar installations as listening environment & locus for dialogue & healing; radio waves as ecosystem for interconnection. Past collaborations include projects with Black Mountain College Museum; IONE/MoM & Pauline Oliveros Foundation; performance of For Zitkála-Šá w/ Raven Chacon @Amant nyc; live-visual manipulation for Tyondai Braxton; &+. Her live-video manipulations as accompaniment to electronic & live instruments were performed at Southbank, London; Elbphilharmonie Kleiner Saal, Hamburg; The Broad/Redcat, Los Angeles; Issue Project Room, NYC & in Boston w/ ACT, a MIT Media Lab.
