Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

Pique-nique Au Labo 4 is an exploratory album by French composer and multi-instrumentalist Jean-Jacques Birgé, collaborating with sixteen innovative musicians. Recorded at Studio GRRR in Bagnolet, France, tracks 1 to 4 were captured in 2023, while tracks 5 to 9 were recorded live in 2024 during the APÉRO LABO sessions.

Each piece originates from spontaneous themes drawn just before performance, emphasizing real-time composition and interaction among the artists. The ensemble's diverse instrumentation — including keyboards, synthesizers, reeds, strings, percussion, and unconventional instruments like the cosmic bow and whirly tube — creates a rich tapestry of sound that defies traditional genre boundaries. This album exemplifies the spirit of collective improvisation, offering listeners a dynamic and unpredictable auditory experience.

Artist Biographies

"Music composer, film director, multimedia author, sound designer, writer, Jean-Jacques Birgé considers music essentially in the audio-visual relationship, or at least in its confrontation with other forms of artistic expression.

Founder of Disques GRRR, he was one of the first synthesists in France in 1973, and with Un Drame Musical Instantané the precursor of the return to the cine-concert in 1976. If his first electronic work dates from 1965, he composes as well for symphonic orchestras that he improvises freely with musicians from the most diverse backgrounds. For his "radiophonic" creations and his multimedia shows (live zapping on the big screen, fireworks, choreographies...), improvisation and preliminary writing merge, the original electroacoustic treatments are integrated with traditional instruments to create evocative musical fictions that he calls musique à propos.

From 1995, he became one of the most popular sound designers in multimedia and a specialist in interactive musical composition, seeking to deepen the effects of meaning and develop an ever-wider range of emotions. As part of his work on major exhibitions, he recently worked at the Louvre Museum, the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Grand Palais, the Panthéon, the Palais de Tokyo, the ZKM...

Alongside around fifty vinyls and CDs, his website drame.org offers 105 unreleased albums (191 hours!) for free listening and downloading.

He has been running a daily, activist and supportive blog for 20 years and gives conferences on the relationship between sound and image."

He learned to play clarinet during childhood before turning his attention to saxophone at the age of fifteen. "Although born in Torino to Italian parents, Roberto Negro grew up in French-speaking Kinshasa, in Zaire, which gave him his first musical experiences.

Through a multitude of inter-disciplinary collaborations, Roberto has flirted with theatre, poetry and theatrical song . In 2011, he also participated in creating the musicians' association project "TRICOLLECTIF", which became the main focus for his creations. He founded the La Scala quartet with Théo Ceccaldi on violin, Valentin Ceccaldi on cello and Adrien Chennebault on drums, all members of Tricollectif, then in 2012, Loving Suite pour Birdy So, a sort of mini-opera for a string quintet and singer, with the singer Elise Caron, developing a deliciously moving variation on the subject of love, hovering between song, improvisation and a new version of classical traditions.

Always on the look out for new opportunities, refreshing experiences and idiomatic experiments that know no boundaries, Roberto Negro is currently working on a number of projects. On top of them, his brand new trio Dadada with Emile Parisien and Michele Rabbia will be recorded for Label Bleu. But also Garibaldi Plop, with Sylvain Darrifourcq and Valentin Ceccaldi the Kimono quartet with Christophe Monniot; his duo with Emile Parisien, Les Métanuits - a playful adaptation for saxophone and piano of first György Ligeti's string quartet; the duo with Théo Ceccaldi, Danse de Salon.

Since 2013 he collaborates as a composer, pianist and musical director with the theatrical company Les Veilleurs, leaded by Emilie Leroux.

His versatile style allows him to play alongside vastly different musicians, including Michel Portal, Louis Sclavis, Daniel Humair, Laurent Dehors, Franck Vaillant, Andy Emler, Joce Mienniel, David Enhco, Luis Vicente, Nicolas Crosse and Eric-Maria Couturier from the Ensemble Inter-Contemporain.

In 2016, Roberto is one of the " young revelations " for the french review Jazz Magazine."
