Palestine, Charlemagne / Seppe Gebruers: Beyondddddd The Notessssss [VINYL] (Konnekt)

A mystical microtonal encounter between Charlemagne Palestine and Seppe Gebruers on four grand pianos — two tuned to 428Hz and two to 440Hz — recorded live in Geneva's Fonderie Kugler, where the duo's passion for unusual tunings and multi-piano performance unfolds in deeply resonant, transcendent layers of sound and silence.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"In the depths of Geneva's Fonderie Kugler red-lit-boudoir, stand four grand pianos surrounded by divinities. The two elder Erard brothers are tuned down a quarter tone lower than their neighbours, a twin pair of gleaming and valiant Yamaha's.

Charlemagne and Seppe both sit facing each other, managing the 428Hz tuning from the tip of their left hand, while the right hand controls the conventional 440Hz machine.

This four-piano fantasy was born a few years ago, when these two gentlemen met around a carillon, and realised they had a common "passion for unusual tunings and the playing of multiple pianos".

This microtonal duo first premiered at the Bijloke in Ghent (2019), and has since remained slightly concealed until Konnekt provided the little spark to reignite this mystical-keyboard-beast.

When the two pianists swap places, during a short moment of inhabited silence, we get a chance to taste what seems to lie beyond the notes. Perhaps the key to appreciating and sharing beauty is magicallyyy mysterioussss after all."-Konnekt

Artist Biographies

"Charlemagne Palestine (born Chaim Moshe Tzadik Palestine) is a performance artist from New York.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1947, Palestine began by singing sacred Jewish music and studying accordion and piano. At the age of 12 he started playing backup conga and bongo drums for Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Kenneth Anger, and Tiny Tim. From 1962-69 Palestine was daily carillonneur for the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan, eventually creating a piece that consisted of 1,500 15 minute performances.

From 1968-72, Palestine studied vocal interpretation with Pandit Pran Nath, experimented on kinetic light sculptures with Len Lye, composed music for Tony and Beverly Conrad's film "Coming Attractions," taught at Cal Arts with Morton Subotnick, created the sound and movement piece Illuminations with Simone Forti, and developed his own alternative synthesizer, The Spectral Continuum Drone Machine. Throughout the seventies Palestine created records, videos, sculptural objects, abstract expressionist visual scores and performed regularly in the company of his stuffed animals. From 1980 to 1995 Palestine performed only rarely, exhibiting instead at Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, and in documenta 8. During that time he also founded the Ethnology Cinema Project in New York, which is dedicated to preserving films that document disappearing traditional cultures.

After moving to Europe in 1995, in addition to creating exhibitions, Palestine performs regularly, re-releasing older material and developing new videos and sonic projects."

"Seppe Gebrue‍‍‍rs (°9/05/1990) is a Belgian pianist, improviser and composer.

The improv music scene is already acquainted with his name, due to his delivered work in several adventurous projects like the large ensemble 'Ifa y xango', the piano duo with Erik Vermeulen, named 'Antiduo, Bambi Pang Pang featuring the legendary Andrew Cyrille, his Solo and the trio with the pioneer Paul Lovens and Hugo Antunes (Seppe, Hugo and Paul).

His approach is far from traditional. Last years he decided to play two pianos tuned in quarter-tones.

In this way he can explore microtonal music and confront the tuning in western world music orthodoxy.

It will be first heard on a recording to be released (2018) with t‍‍‍he trio Seppe, Hugo and Paul.

Seppe is also doing electronic live-processing with projects like Keenroh featuring Paul Lytton, Glin Fraktion and Ifa y Xa‍‍‍ngo Tentet. He is also playing church organ in a duo with Joachim Badenhorst.

Besides that Gebruers plays the piano in a improv trio with trumpeter Luis Vicente (Pt) and drummer Onno Govaert (NL).

In 2013, he graduated - Summa cum laude - from Antwerp conservatory, where he enjoyed a jazz education (with a.o. Erik Vermeulen as his teacher), as well as a classical schooling (tutored by a.o. Levente Kende).

Read more about Seppe Gebruers's projects and recordingsOver the years, he wrote accompanying music for plays (with strong musical accents), such as 'Omtrent Othello' (Concerni‍‍‍ng Othello), 'Wanneer de paarden sterven' (When the horses pass away) and '4:3' from 'Tibaldus'. Gebruers composed also the music of 2 Short films by Pieter Dumoulin 'Het zwijgen van Helena' and 'The Reconstruction' (directed together with Timeau Dumoulin).

Since the age of twelve, Seppe Gebruers plays at home and abroad. Starting with his piano trio, 'Jazzfact' (together with Nathan Wouters and Jakob Warmenbol)and later he performed with ‍‍‍

musicians such as Nate Wooley(US), Jim Black (US), Andrew D'Angelo (US), John Dikeman(us), Onno Govaert(NL), Seijiro Murayama(J), Léo Dupleix (Fr), Richard Comte (fr), Nicolas Field, Eric Thielemans,‍‍‍ Teun Verbruggen, Robin Verheyen, Joachim Badenhorst, Johan Graden (SE), Jasper Stadhouders (NL) and many others.

Seppe Gebruers is also a founder and the‍‍‍ artistic leader of Troika vzw and did numerous collaborations with el NEGOCITO Records and Citadelic."
