Austere yet deeply communicative, this trio session pairs Swiss double bassist Daniel Studer's articulate resonance with Swiss/Swedish Sebastian Strinning's expansive reed textures and German drummer Daniel Weber's perceptive, responsive interaction, forging improvised soundscapes defined by attentive gesture, shifting timbres, and the eloquence of silence itself.

Recorded in November, 2023, by Leo Kwandt.
Cut unites three seasoned improvisers — Daniel Studer on double bass, Sebastian Strinning on tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, and contrabass clarinet, and Daniel Weber on drums — in a deeply focused session of acoustic free improv recorded in November 2023. The set emphasizes attentive interaction and open forms that resist conventional harmonic and rhythmic frameworks, instead privileging gesture, touch, and the unfolding of each moment.
Studer — a Zurich-based bassist and composer with a long history in European improvised music — brings a broad expressive range, from sustained resonance and arco weight to subtle timbral shifts born of close listening. His work here continues a lifelong interest in blending improvisation with compositional sensibilities and exploring space as musical material.
Strinning, who moves fluidly across reeds from tenor sax to bass and contrabass clarinet, contributes a spectrum of breath-driven multiphonics, overtones, and low register depths that expand the trio's sonic terrain. Weber's drums provide not propulsion in a traditional sense but an acute sense of temporal shape — responding to micro-events, articulating silence, and coloring the collective texture with brushed resonance and incisive touch.
Across its tracks, Cut privileges the "cut" not as abrupt break but as an incisive focus on sound's genesis and decay, allowing sparse gestures to blossom into sustained tonal fields and fleeting impulses to gain spatial weight. For listeners attuned to microcosmic dynamics and the subtle architecture of sound in motion, this album unfolds as a rich, patient exploration of acoustic presence and collective attentiveness.
