Recorded live at BLACK BOX in Münster, the trio of Ernesto Rodrigues (viola, crackle box), Erhard Hirt (electric guitar, electronics), and Guilherme Rodrigues (cello, objects) unfolds a focused, textural improvisation where tactile electronics, bowed strings, and percussive gestures move from fragile passages toward denser mechanical motion, shaping a richly detailed sonic environment with subtly shifting momentum.

Recorded at BLACK BOX at cuba Munster, in Germany, on October 12th, 2025, by Stefan Schwarze.
"My somewhat belated review of Mistika jpeg oscillations from last month does then suggest a comparison already with the new Munster (recorded in that city, also last month) from Ernesto Rodrigues and Guilherme Rodrigues, now joined by Erhard Hirt on electric guitar and electronics.
Hirt continues to be known from a prior era, specifically with the quartet Xpact, the reboot of which (basically fire music, particularly from the sax...) hasn't actually struck me much. But his newer collaborations are bringing a sophisticated (tactile...) sense of electronics into different musical-textural orientations, as with Munster — which begins in plaintive mode, twittering through mysterious gossamer relations....
First here from Hirt though was Especially For You (reviewed September 2023), from Bead Records and originally conceived as an Xpact II session (but ending up more ephemeral...), then Trails (from Creative Sources, recorded April 2024), another quartet (also without horns, reviewed here July 2024) — and then, also earlier this year, Hirt released the trio albums Shifting Types of Amazement (from FMR, recorded June 2024, with Udo Schindler as one of two clarinets) and e.g. Extended Guitar Trio (recorded October 2024 with Hans Tammen and Nick Didkovsky, out on Handaxe...).
Munster with the Rodrigueses is even more recent, and of course continues their own series of trios with distinguished musicians (e.g. guitarist Olaf Rupp and RRR, first noted here August 2018...), including seemingly taking up some concerns from the earlier quartet (also with electric guitar and electronics...).
Mistika jpeg oscillations has much more bass, but both involve senses of both alien landscape and transportation, or perhaps even of alien transportation. (And senses of motion are also senses of musical momentum?) I'd already noted a "train tracks" vibe for the earlier album, but then a listening companion spontaneously described some middle sections on Munster as recalling sounds of "racing pods" from the first Star Wars prequel....
There's indeed also a naturalistic sense to Munster too, so typical of Ernesto Rodrigues, sometimes more mechanical here (e.g. hocketing or percussive, e.g. in a sort of third movement scherzo...), but coming to involve smoother sections as well (plus e.g. broad glissandi).
Electronics can be quite active, but not necessarily loud, meaning they require attention to bring out other facets (not unlike the often quiet Carlos Santos from many Rodrigues releases...), and in general it's the richness of the sonic relations (over a relatively short length) that forges a detailed and distinctive musical tapestry.
So I'm not sure how or where bizarre or even extraterrestrial ecosystems fit, but (after some ominous moments early...) Munster does end up seeming like a figuration of human redemption." — Todd McComb's Jazz Thoughts

Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Ernesto Rodrigues "He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio. His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music. The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements. Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning. Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups. Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance. Has created the record label Creative Sources Recordings in 1999, which mainly concentrates on releasing experimental and electro-acoustic music." ^ Hide Bio for Ernesto Rodrigues • Show Bio for Erhard Hirt "Erhard Hirt (born October 31, 1951 in Bonn ) is a German jazz and improvisation musician ( guitar, electronics). Hirt initially played self-taught blues before working with jazz-oriented rock bands from 1970. From 1974 he played in the experimental group "Jazz community," but in addition also with blues bands like the "Delta Blues Band" or "Matt Walsh blues band" before he founded his own improvisation ensemble in 1979, with whom he on the 1981 Moers Festival occurred. He then played with Wolfgang Fuchs, Hans Schneider and Paul Lytton in the group XPACT, which recorded the album "Frogman's View" in 1984, but also in a trio with Schneider and Radu Malfatti. In addition to Fuchs, Malfatti and Lytton, he was involved in founding the European "King Übü Orchestrü" in the mid-1980s. He appeared in a trio with Phil Minton and Willi Kellers, and in a duo with Lol Coxhill. In 1990 he formed a duo with Dietmar Diesner, in 1992 he was a member of the Humannoise Ensemble, along with Helmut Bieler-Wendt, Maud Sauer and Uwe Oberg. He continued to work with Anne LeBaron, Phil Wachsmann and Alfred Zimmerlin, with Minton and John Butcher (CD 1996) and with the multi-instrumentalist Martin Klapperand with the Swiss vocalist Dorothea Schürch. But since 1977 he has also performed solo projects, presented solo albums and toured the United States with them. He has also performed with other guitarists such as Derek Bailey, Hans Reichel, Joe Sachse, Uwe Kropinski, Eugene Chadbourne, Jean-Marc Montera and Stephan Wittwer. In the guitar quartet Extended Guitars he meets Keith Rowe, Hans Tammen and Nick Didkovsky. Since 1997 he has been part of the Ensemble Realtime, in which improvisers from North Rhine-Westphalia such as Mark Charig,Gunda Gottschalk, Ute Völker, Melvyn Poore, Stefan Keune and Thomas Lehn work together. He recorded the album "Trinidad" (1999) with Lehn and Martin Theurer. In 1984 Hirt received the WDR's "Town Music Prize". According to the journal "Guitar Techniques", he is "one of the most original and fascinating experimental solo guitarists at the moment..."
