"In music, the art of time, you necessarily find the "what" in the "when". And the "what / when" factor, here, is a jumpy, unquiet, syncopated music coming from the same sources which originated both the Delta and the Chicago blues, the most primordial rock 'n' roll, hardcore punk and free jazz: guts and nerves.
So, it's with no real surprise that Portuguese guitarist Luís Lopes, American contrabassist Adam Lane and Israeli drummer Igal Foni play a strange hybrid of all those styles. Maybe the jazz element is the concrete assembling everything else in this CD, but it's also true that the purpose was to form a power trio, just like the ones celebrated in the history of rock: Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys and Experience, Cream, Blue Cheer, Rush and Motorhead are good examples. Or Sex Pistols, without the vocalist. And a power trio indeed we have, sometimes brutal, but not making things to easy (the rhythms are quite complex, nothing a teenage garage band can do), with no unnecessary ornamentations but evident efficacy.
This is emotional, raw, in-your-face music, with lots of feedback and distortion and astonishing solos. When the risk to get tired with all the run turns a menace, they give you some moments of piece, but even in those softer interludes they grab your heart and mind and take it off."-Clean Feed
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Luis Lopes "Averse to any linearity, the idiosyncratic Luís Lopes, a musician connected to Jazz, improvised and experimental music, has been building his career, a simple and singular story, characterised by a unique voice, free of corsets, formal ties or constraints and mannerisms regarding strict stilistical implications. He is an unfollower... experiments himself through paradoxes. Invokes teachings by following standards of subversion to any possibility of pre-established idea. Eminent self-subversion... Introspective timeless trance. Running Multi-international groups, especially his Humanization 4tet (with Portuguese Rodrigo Amado and Texan's Aaron and Stefan Gonzalez), Lisbon Berlin Trio (with Germans Christian Lillinger, Robert Landfermann), and his "Noise" or "Love Song(s)" Solos, plus his highly recommended records he is growing as an international artist, playing at important Festivals and venues not just in Portugal but in Europe and U.S. Coming from a rock/punk and blues background, while studying at local classic and rock schools, he began studying Jazz at Hot Club Portugal School and then was finalist at Escola de Jazz do Barreiro/Lisbon. Then did studies with Saxophonist Joe Giardullo who opened for him the doors of modern jazz harmony complexity through the George Russell's "Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization", plunging Lopes into the world of improvised and experimental music, without disregard for his fascination with distorion and guitar feedbacks, expressed in different incursions into noise music, while also canalizes energys towards projects where he can develop his composing abilities. In more recent times, Lopes has played and / or recorded with different artists connected to jazz and improvised music, such as Noel Akchoté, Christian Lillinger, Robert Landfermann, Marco Von Orelly, Marc Unternahrer, Adam Lane, Igal Foni, Floros Floridis, Joe Giardulo, Harvey Sorgen, Benjamin Duboc, Phill Niblock, Ernesto Rodrigues, Paulo Curado, Sei Miguel, Rodrigo Amado, Hernâni Faustino, Gabriel Ferrandini, Rodrigo Pinheiro, Miguel Mira, Aaron Gonzalez, Stefan Gonzalez, Dennis Gonzalez, Elliot Levin, Alfred Hart, Daniel Levin, Reuben Radding, Daniel Carter, Jeb Bishop, Josh Abrams, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Samuel Blaser, Boris Hauf, Evan Parker, Olivier Benoit, Fred Lomberg-holm, Valentin Ceccaldi, Gonçalo Almeida, among many others." ^ Hide Bio for Luis Lopes • Show Bio for Adam Lane "Adam Lane - Composer/Bassist By combining a disparate set of influences into a unique improvisational voice, Adam Lane has become recognized as one of the most original creative voices in contemporary jazz. His 2006 recording New Magical Kingdom, was recently featured in the Penguin Jazz Guide 1001 Best Records Ever Made, and his most recent recording, Ashcan Ranting received a myriad of critical praise including four stars in Downbeat. His current projects include his Full Throttle Orchestra, a nine piece ensemble formed to realize his extended jazz orchestral compositions, The Adam Lane Trio, featuring legendary reedist Vinny Golia, Four Corners, a co-lead ensemble with reedist Ken Vandermark, and an ongoing solo project that combines unique processed double bass improvisations with Lane's original story telling. As a sideman he has performed with an eclectic mix of musicians, from tenor great John Tchicai, to alto iconoclast Richard Tabnik, to rock legend Tom Waits. Lane's compositions have been praised for their audacity and originality. Sam Prestiani of Jazziz says of Lane's writing: "His confidence and confrontational prowess as well as his abiding sense of lyricism and heavy-groove power place him in the lineage of forward-jazz adventurism." And Bill Meyer writes in Downbeat, "Lane's music is genuine, accessible, fun. The music is deeply in touch with the essential pleasures of earwig-worthy tunes, fat bluesy grooves, and sheer tonal beauty." (Downbeat Jan 2011) Lane studied composition at Wesleyan University with Anthony Braxton, and at California Institute of the Arts with Wadada Leo Smith. In 1996 he received a Paternings Scholarship for study at the Darmstadt School for New Music where he studied double bass with Steffano Scodanibbio, and attended master classes in composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen." ^ Hide Bio for Adam Lane • Show Bio for Igal Foni Igal Foni is a New Yorker jazz drummer, Married to trombonist Reut Regev.
