"If an architect were to make music, what would it sound like? "Things The Willow Told Me" is the answer. With a love of music that predated his architectural ambitions, recording artist Gordon Hall has now come full circle with a debut album crafted in a way that only an architect could. Conceived at the outset as a series of independent spatial experiences, this captivating journey challenges the listener at every turn with structural nuance and unpredictable improvisation. The musical canvas is sublimely rendered with color, texture, primitive emotion and a skillful application of acoustic chiaroscuro. With a respectful nod to conventional genres the artist transcends commercial formulas, challenging the listener instead with an authentic and provocative dialogue of instrumentation. It is a new musical aesthetic crafted largely by quirky instrumental virtuosity and a belief in the transformative synergy between form and space. The sound is a haunting yet playful enhancement to any acoustical environment.
Much of the material included in this collection was directly or indirectly inspired by the cypress swamp where the artist resides. A native of rural eastern North Carolina, he takes cues from the unbinding circumstances of nature such as the turbulent uncertainty of wind or the uncompromising patina of human habitation lying unapologetically in wasteland watersheds. Among the many themes present in this body of work is the idea that the beauty in music, just as in nature, comes as much from the process as from the product and when done well, leaves the enthusiastic listener with only one lingering question. "What happens next?" "-Gordon Hall
