"In the musical universe we currently inhabit in time and space, there is a burgeoning school of improvisers in the new music camp that bear our scrutiny well. I speak of a loose confederation of improvising musicians in France, Portugal, Germany and elsewhere on the Continent. There are counterparts in New York and elsewhere in the US, and I have covered many of them over the last several years. Today, however we return to France.

Today a duet between cellist Hugues Vincent, who we have talked about on these pages before, and pianist John Cuny, whose playing is not as familiar to me. They give us a full set of abstract improvisations on the album Tagtraum (improvising beings 42).

This is an extended two-way interaction that models some stunning sound-color essays using extended techniques, different ways of sounding each instrument and on occasion prepared strings.

Vincent is a virtuoso at this kind of improvising, but then John Cuny very much keeps up his end of the dialogue. The different velocities and intersection of dual sonic universes range from sharp pointillisms to simultaneous barrages of thick sound-carpet emanations.

This is uncompromising fare, with little in the way of sound signposts of a secular everyday sort. Instead the two avidly carve out ever-varying shapes built from exotic sounds and quixotic silences, in ever-differing intensities and poetically spontaneous inventiveness.

If anybody but me remembers the Acting Trio album that came out on BYG in 1969, that was a lineage forbear if you need to picture in your mind's ear what to expect. But perhaps there are not so many who know that record. No matter.

Suffice to say that this is full-bore free expression of the highest kind. It will appeal to those adventurous souls who come out of avant jazz or new music camps, or perhaps no camp at all except the camp of the new unknown.

"Alongside classical studies in cello with Denise Cherret, Hugues Vincent is trained on Jazz at EDIM and the Montreuil Conservatory, earning a Bachelor in Musicology and a teaching diploma (CAPES) of the Paris 8-Vincennes University. He attends improvisation masterclasses under Sophia Domancich, Didier Levallet, Régis Huby, Vincent Courtois, Ernst Resijeger, Barre Philips, Joëlle Léandre...

Over the years he has collaborated with: Tilbol, Celluloïd (with Franck Smith), Joelle Léandre's "String Project", Otomo Yoshihide's "New Jazz Ensemble", David S. Ware's "Ensemble à cordes", Bobun (with viola player Frantz Loriot), the Ska band "Le Pélican Frisé", the acousmatic trio Bolitz (with Polo and Vincent Laubeuf)... He writes music for Four Roses For Lucienne (based on texts by Roland Topor), the free rock trio Ganjin...

He has appeared with numerous improvisers: Vincent Courtois, Claude Tchamitchian, Jean-François Pauvros, Luc Ex, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Itaru Oki... and also worked in choreographic fields (with Chia Yin Ling, Imre Thormann, Ima Tenko...).

He tours regularly in many countries (Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Italia, Spain, United-States, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Russia, Japan, Taïwan)...

He is featured on over 20 records, his most recent albums being "Free Trees" on Leo Records (with Vladimir Kudryavtsev and Maria Logofet) and the critically-acclaimed "Fragment" on Improvising Beings (with Morishige Yasumune)."

"He studied piano at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, then at the National School of Music in Pantin, and obtained a first prize for piano and chamber music. He was introduced to jazz at the American School in Paris.

Performed in various ensembles, ranging from classical music (cello-piano duet), to improvisation (various encounters with Jean Bordé, Hugues Vincent), to free-jazz (quartet by Gabriele Digiulio). He plays regularly in "Fröhn", where he is also composer.

Passionate about encounters with other artistic forms, he participated as a composer-improviser-interpreter in the creation of shows mixing music and theater ("Rien à voir avec la choucroute op 1", "Four Roses for Lucienne"). Also teaches the piano in conservatories and associations."
