Chaparreiro, Antonio & Alcada: Opus Macaronicorum (Creative Sources)

Sometimes frenetic, always exhilarating duo work between Portugese electric guitarist Antonio Chapparreiro and drummer/percussionist Pedro Alcada, succinct tracks, some as short as 36 seconds, where the two spar and unite over angular rhythms and abrupt changes, with a twisted sense of humor and a wealth of adventurous spirit.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"The brand new Opus Macaronicorum marks the debut of the duo formed by two notable musicians who are still waiting for a wider and fair recognition, Antonio Chaparreiro and Pedro Alcada.

The former has been developing his activity in the areas of improvised music and experimentalism, having collaborated repeatedly with figures such as Ernesto Rodrigues and Emidio Buchinho.

Alcada divides his attention between independent pop-rock, in projects like Coty Cream, and the same languages of his partner in this CD, along with musicians like Paulo Alexandre Jorge and Carlos Ferrao, among others.

What comes here is a collection of pieces as a general rule of short or even very short duration (13 altogether, defying superstition), associating the electric guitar of Chaparreiro and the battery of Alcada, that also adds here notes of baroque and harmonic flute.

Along the disc varying the preparations and the signal processions of the guitar, as well as the references of style - there are here echoes of Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey and Keith Rowe, but not happening of this same, given the very character Of the approaches of Antonio Chaparreiro. This has a sound clearly grounded in rock, but his exploratory propensity frees him from any allegiance to that language.

The same can be said of Pedro Alcada: if this does not have the same type of jazz play of many improvisation drummers, it also goes beyond the rhythmic primacy introduced in this circuit by those who moved from rock, indulging in a textural work.

This results in a restless and questioning song that keeps us alert from beginning to end, with ideas and outcomes that often surprise us."-Rui Eduardo Paes, Jazz.pt (translated by some program somewhere)
