"The formation of a band is usually justified by the common conceptions and interests of its members, but in the case of this Portuguese trio we have an example confirming that the inverse idea can also be true. In fact, José Bruno Parrinha, Luís Lopes and Ricardo Jacinto couldn't be more different from each other, be it in terms of backgrounds, vocabularies, used techniques and even attitudes.

Parrinha comes from jazz studies and is now committed to a very refined idea of free improvised music. Lopes has a past in rock and his projects either glue that type of sound with open form jazz or go to the domains of extreme guitar noise. Also a sound sculptor and instalacionist, Jacinto works usually in the field of experimental music, with some interludes inside the pop song world. When this trio presented itself in concert for the first time, it was a surprise. They found a key to communicate musically and that key is a collective capacity to measure energy and to weigh materials. "Garden" is a marvel of controlled, even when intense, improvisation, and of a very disciplined, and yet seeming loose, economy of sounds.

It's amazing listening to how Parrinha clarinet or saxophones deal with only three or four notes in a piece, exploring the combinations until he can't do nothing more with it. How is it possible to do so much with such few elements? How can Lopes and Jacinto do more with less, even using electricity and electronic processors? "Averse to any linearity, the idiosyncratic Luís Lopes, a musician connected to Jazz, improvised and experimental music, has been building his career, a simple and singular story, characterised by a unique voice, free of corsets, formal ties or constraints and mannerisms regarding strict stilistical implications. He is an unfollower... experiments himself through paradoxes. Invokes teachings by following standards of subversion to any possibility of pre-established idea. Eminent self-subversion... Introspective timeless trance.

Running Multi-international groups, especially his Humanization 4tet (with Portuguese Rodrigo Amado and Texan's Aaron and Stefan Gonzalez), Lisbon Berlin Trio (with Germans Christian Lillinger, Robert Landfermann), and his "Noise" or "Love Song(s)" Solos, plus his highly recommended records he is growing as an international artist, playing at important Festivals and venues not just in Portugal but in Europe and U.S.

Coming from a rock/punk and blues background, while studying at local classic and rock schools, he began studying Jazz at Hot Club Portugal School and then was finalist at Escola de Jazz do Barreiro/Lisbon. Then did studies with Saxophonist Joe Giardullo who opened for him the doors of modern jazz harmony complexity through the George Russell's "Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization", plunging Lopes into the world of improvised and experimental music, without disregard for his fascination with distorion and guitar feedbacks, expressed in different incursions into noise music, while also canalizes energys towards projects where he can develop his composing abilities.

"Ricardo Jacinto / Lisbon (1975). Lives and works in Lisbon and Belfast. Working as an artist and musician mainly focusing on the relation of sound and space. Currently pursuing a PHD at the Sonic Arts Research Center / Belfast. Graduated in Architecture at the University of Lisbon-Faculty of Architecture, and Sculpture and Advanced Visual Arts at Ar.Co / Lisbon. Graduate courses at the School of Visual Arts, New York. Musical studies at the Hot Clube de Portugal and Academia de Amadores de Música / Lisbon. Since 1998 has presented his work in individual and group exhibitions, concerts and performances, in Portugal and abroad. Has collaborated extensively with other artists, musicians, architects and performers. Founder of OSSO - Cultural Association
