Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Some avant jazz artists make a point of looking back from time to time to the rich history and roots of the music. Anthony Braxton of course is one, and then so is trumpetmaster Jean-Luc Cappozzo. He with his pianist partner Cecile Cappozzo take a lovingly lingering look at some Charles Mingus and Mal Waldron gems on the recent Soul Eyes (Fou Records FR-CD15). Mingus gets his due in versions of "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," "Nostalgia in Times Square" and "Pithecathropus Erectus"; Waldron is remember with "No More Tears," "The Seagulls of Kristiansund" and perhaps his best known composition-song, the title cut "Soul Eyes." Cecile puts forth a lean-to-lush, crisply modern piano style that evokes everyone from Monk to Ran Blake (and of course a gesture towards the pianisms of Mingus and Waldron) but does it in her own way. Jean-Luc brings in some of his special avant timbrality but then can be touchingly straightforward, as in his articulation of the "Pork Pie" melody line. Both are verymuch on their game. The duo format allows plenty of loose flexibility which the two realize with a oneness that communicates readily and happily. And in the process the artistry of Cecile and Jean-Luc comes through with dedication and a sort of reverence to the masters that projects outwards with nice forays into the outer realms now and again, but can and does stay nicely within the changes of the songs as the spirit moves. It is a beautiful set that manages to remind you how central these songs still are--and also how much improvisational room there still remains for the right artists to refresh the music."-Grego Applegate Edwards

"Cécile Cappozzo was born in 1984 in Roanne of parents musicians.

Trained on the classical piano, she quickly turned to jazz and improvised music. After a visit to the Conservatoire de Saint-Étienne (jazz department) and to the Faculty of Musicology of Tours, she multiplied the musical experiences and formed during master classes with Mal Waldron, Charles Gayle, Jacques Loussier, Sophia Domancich ..., And won the Prix Fédécouverte 2006 with his own trio, at the age of 22, which will allow him to perform in the halls belonging to the Fédération des Scènes de Jazz de France.

At the same time, she became passionate about flamenco at the age of 20, took her first flamenco dance classes in Tours with Aurélia Vidal, was trained at various courses and festivals in France (Mont de Marsan, Rivesaltes, Paris) and Spain (Seville, Granada). Passionate, she leaves in Andalusia, in Jerez de la Frontera, guardian city of cante jondo or "deep song" according to the aficionados, for a duration of 2 years (2007 to 2009). She met her "maestra", Manuela Carpio, a great gypsy dancer with inexhaustible knowledge, completed her training with other artists such as Maria José Franco, Ana Maria Lopez and Carmen Herrera, and especially Mercedes Ruiz, a young internationally renowned jerezana dancer . She continues her training with great dancers such as La Lupi, Fran Espinosa, Israel Galvan, La Moneta ...

Back in France in 2010, La Cecilia continues her training with artists such as Bobote, Juana Amaya, Israel Galvan, José Maya, Manuela Carrasco, La Lupi and aims to promote traditional flamenco by offering internships and Spectacles, and always bearing in mind the generosity and the strength inherent to this art.

She returned to Andalusia very regularly to continue her training with Manuela Carpio (Jerez de la Frontera), in the schools of Seville and with La Lupi (Malaga).

In 2014, she created her own group La Cecilia y su gente . She is also part of the choreographic group (contemporary dance) by Dimitri Tsiapkinis ( Omnivion ), the first of which was given at the Center Chorégraphique de Tours in September 2014 in which she presents a contemporary flamenco solo.

Cécile Cappozzo also performs as a flamenco dancer, multiplying projects with different French and Spanish artists ( Cie Helena Cueto , Cie Acento Flamenco , Cie Sabrina Le Guen , show with Carmen Herrera, Duo with Karine Gonzalez ...), as a pianist. Jean-Luc Cappozzo, an internationally recognized jazz trumpet player, released his first album on the label Fou Records entitled " Soul Eyes " in November 2015 ). She is also a member of the Trio Alzea (world music: violin / voice / piano), the final project of which was carried out by both the Poitou-Charentes Region and SPEDIDAM and ADAMI. , Came to applaud them at the New Theater of Châtellerault during the Winter Festival of December 215, was triumphant.

In addition, she is invited by various jazz groups (duo with Sébastien Boisseau, among others) on the initiative of Les Sources Sonores project (contemporary flamenco and free improvisation with the Marseille dancer La Fabia).

She is also part of the new band of the famous guitarist Juan de Lerida as a pianist and dancer.

All these projects nurture her teaching of flamenco dance, which she teaches during regular courses (Tours, Bourges, Blois, Lyon, Paris, ...) "
