Artist Biographies

"He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.

His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.

The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.

Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance.

Has created the record label Creative Sources Recordings in 1999, which mainly concentrates on releasing experimental and electro-acoustic music."

"Manuel Rodríguez, aka Manolo Rodriguez, strongly believes he learnt improvising before reading music. After discovering a very special CD by Tim Berne, he strongly focused his career in one direction, ' improvisation'. From then, this relation with the music became his main tool and the center of his professional output.

Manuel shares projects, including composition and performing, with some leading musicians and dancers, Carlos Costa (The Rebel Octopus) ,Juan Matos-Electro-acústica (Graja),Cristo Barrios, Teresa Lorenzo-Danza(Turn Off),Zeben González Improvisación contemporánea(Binary Switch) etc. He has occasionally collaborated with Tim Berne, Tomas Fujiwara, Orquesta sinfónica de Tenerife, Javier Pedreira, Axolot, Wade Matthews, Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Lali Barriére, Ingar Zach, Abdul moimême o Miguel A. García. Also, he is frequently invited for clinics.

He began his professional career as guitarist, then professor and occasionally he acts as producer and music arranger. As arranger and producer, he received the UFI award for the best jazz recording of the year and his discography includes already forty CDs.His new release is a solo work for guitar. Instant-áneas #16.

As a composer and improviser, Manuel Rodríguez started and developed his career on his own and later started sharing projects, The freeway band, Dr. Bacteria, Machuca Trio, Both Sides of the Coin, Contemporary String Trio, The Pickles, etc., groups that has been present throughout his career. With them he participated in festivals such as Imaxina Xons, Impro en Canarias,FMAC, Loftmf, Heineken Jazz Festival, Keroxen , NumaCircuit, Canarias JazzShowRoom, Cruce. Relay, Escucha 14 or XXI Punto de Encuentro Canarias.

He is the author of an extended tutorial about basic fundaments on the electric guitar called "Fundamentos Básicos de la guitarra moderna" and wrote some articles for the Music:life magazine. Manuel Rodriguez is also the co-founder member of the Loft Music Festival in Tenerife, which already included some international musicians such as Tim Berne and Marc Ducret. At present teachs guitar and improvisation in Jazz Department at the Escuela de Música Guillermo González.

Manuel Rodríguez was born in Tenerife, Canary Islands. At the early age of 7 he started playing a stringed instrument for the first time, the lute, not realizing that 'to vary repeatedly a melody is actually to improvise'. As a teenager he discovered his natural instrument, the electric guitar, starting lessons with a few local musicians. Soon after that he moved to Los Angeles where he got his 'professional guitar player GIT' diploma. In 2007 and 2011 he went to New York (SIM) and has studied with musicians like Tim Berne, Brad Shepik, Mary Halvorson, Steve Coleman, Tom Rainey, Gerald Cleaver, Wade Matthews ,etc..."
