Der Verboten (Loriot / Chessex / Piromalli / Wolfarth): Der Verboten (Clean Feed)

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Der Verboten is a new version of the partnership between violist Frantz Loriot and pianist Cedric Piromalli originally called Treffpunkt, the German word for "meeting point". Originally they had the contributions of Mikko Innanen and Christian Weber. When the guests became Sam Kulik and Brad Henkel, the name changed to Kaijo, which is, simply, the term "treffpunkt" in Japanese.

Now, with Antoine Chessex and Christian Wolfarth on board, here's a new name for different music following the same principles: a common sound resulting from distinct perspectives and backgrounds. Improvisation, as a method and a language, is the unifying factor, and the result seems like "the course of a river", as the liner notes written by music curator Fabien Simon state.

The content of this album has indeed an aquatic quality - it flows very naturally, always mutating but also always maintaining focus and direction. The music is transparent but compact, moving with a uniformity that seems still, as a living organism formed by collaborative little beings. Like water also, it's fresh, reconforting and energetic, a special example of the creativity we can find these days in the field we call "improvised music"."-Clean Feed

"Antoine Chessex is a Swiss composer, saxophone player and sound artist born in 1980 in Vevey (CH).

His works assume a wide diversity of forms spanning compositions for ensembles, solo performances, sound installations and transdisciplinary projects. Chessex's compositions are characterized by textural density and microtonal tensions often resulting in sound masses addressing the physical dimensions of sound and spaces. The works of Antoine Chessex have over the years crossed the boundaries between noise, modern composition, improvisation and electronic music.

His solo works feature dense layers of sustained pitches reacting with the architecture of the space he's performing in or massive clouds of amplified sax resulting in intense live actions in total immersion in the sound.

He presents his works worldwide and appeared at numerous international venues and festivals in the United States, Japan, China, Russia and all around Europe.

Recent compositional works include "DUST" for 3 violins and electronics (2010), "Schichten" & "Ritournelle Fulgurante"commissioned by oh ton Ensemble (2013 & 2014), "Metakatharsis" & "Damage is done" commissioned by the Phoenix Ensemble in Basel (2011 & 2015), "Chute" for the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin (2012), "Plastic Concrete" & "Accumulation" for Apartment House in London (2014 & 2015), "Les Abîmes Hallucinés" for the Ensemble Proton in Bern (2016) as well as numerous electronic music pieces.

Collaborations with musicians Lasse Marhaug, Zbigniew Karkowski, Jérôme Noetinger, Maja Ratkje, Valerio Tricoli, Dave Phillips, the noise band Monno, architect Christian Waldvogel and media artist Ulrike Gabriel (Flow, 2002)."

"Cédric Piromalli- Piano Keyboards

Born in Paris in 1976. After studying classical piano and musicology, his first group experience was Triad Trio (Sébastien Boisseau, Nicolas Larmignat). He then explores the solo game, working on the repertoire of Thelonious Monk. During his time in the Jazz class at the CSNM in Paris, he meets Daniel Humair, whom he will have the chance to follow in various musical adventures. More recently, it is through the Hammond organ that he declares his taste for the swing and creates around this instrument the trio The West Lines and the sextet The West Lines + 3. It is close to the company Nantaise Frasques. In this context, he participated in the project Personal Jesus (music by Guillaume Hazebrouck on a text by Tanguy Viel) and created the trio Quiet. He regularly accompanies Erwan Jan's creations for the Petit Faucheux Children's Choir (Le Bazar à Voix). He enjoys free improvisation, as evidenced by his collaborations with Paul Lovens, Will Guthrie, or Mikko Innanen.

His interest in electric music, the world of rock and song, is realized through his collaborations with guitarist Pascal Maupeu (Mop Meuchiine, Shampoo Meuchiine, Eric Lareine and their children).Cédric Piromalli was an associate artist of Petit Faucheux (Tours) for the year 2013.

Pedagogy is an important part of his musical activity, he teaches at the Jazz school in Tours."
