"When certain hermaphrodite snails - that is they are male and female at the same time - mate, they stab each other with so-called love darts. Now, for the first time, scientists have discovered a snail species with a love dart that works like an injection needle.

The syringe-like dart delivers a "gland product" to the partner snail "via channels within the dart and comes out through the holes that are present on the side of the dart," Joris Koene, an ecologist at Vrije University in Amsterdam, explained to NBC News in an email.

Other snails' love darts carry a gland substance on their outside, he added, "so this is indeed the first example of a (rather complicated) injection needle."

What the newly discovered gland product of the Malaysian snail does to the mate is, for now, unknown, Koene said, though it may cause the female reproductive system to store more sperm for fertilization of eggs as a gland product does in the better studied brown garden snail.

Given the attachment of the syringe-like dart to the Malaysian snail, it "is almost certainly reused on different partners during different matings," Koene added.

In addition to highlighting the biological diversity of love darts, the study published online July 24 in the journal PLoS One "might further inspire the field of biomimicry" for a new class injection needles at the doctor's office, the team concludes in the paper."-John Roach, NBC News

"Timothée Quost started studying the trumpet at Beaune music school in 1996, in the classical music section. Still, it is when he discovered rock and jazz music, while in his teens, that he really headed into music and put together some projects with different bands.

He decided that music would be his job and entered Chalon sur Saône Academy of Music in 2007. There, he followed a combined curriculum in the classical and jazz music sections and graduated respectively in 2011 and 2012.

Meanwhile, he took part in many different projects in Burgundy, such as Dijon Bigband, Franck Tortiller's OJJB or Chalon-Bourgogne Bigband.

It is thanks to Oliver Py (a teacher at Chalon sur Saône Conservatory [CRR]) that Timothée found his way in musical creation, through a very open approach, mixing improvisation, contemporary music, electroacoustic, mixed music and modern jazz.

Thereby he created the QUOSTET sextet, his first ambitious project, through which he delves into the links between contemporary and improvised music and with which he won the Jazz à Vannes springboard in 2012.

Moreover, he is the generator of the band OCTOPULSE, more dedicated to electronic music, whose first album was released in November 2012.

He also plays the trumpet with Pierre Juillard in a duo of improvised mixed music called Les Astragales.

In September 2012, Timothée was admitted to the National Superior Conservatory of Paris for Music and Dance, in the Jazz department, where he improves his trumpet practice and his composition skills, which allows him to go deeper into his attempt at mixing different music genres. Since then, we have had the opportunity to hear him perform with Riccardo Del Fra or Joachim Kühn as well as in his own compositions, in particular a piece commissioned by the Orgue en Ville Festival in Besançon in the summer of 2013 and in a ballet creation centered on Alice in Wonderland in the spring of 2014.

He is still exploring new musical grounds, trying to build possible relationships between contemporary music, free improvisation and jazz, as well as more experimental music, which can be heard in his different performances. He has a lot of projects in store, including a second record and many original creations."

"Camille Emaille is a French percussionist born in 1993 in Nice. She is studying at the Musik-Akademie of Basel (Switzerland) with Christian Dierstein on contemporary music and with Fred Frith on free improvisation. She considers music a part of everything, part of everyday life. That's why she began to improvise, to feel music more as a flux, as something which is already here, something that we (the musician and the audience) just jump into... She works with many artists from varying fields, such as video, muppet theatre, shadow theater with the show Divines Bovines and plays in the musical projects Oxke Fixu (duo with clarinet), Defibrillator (electronic, e-trombone, perc.) and Ratax (d-b., cl., perc.). She used to organize and play in " wild " events, happenings that took place in unusual locations such as closed tunnels, abandoned hospitals, highway bridges, old synagogues (festival Myosotis); events where people go without any knowledge of what will transpire...

She worked during workshops and master classes with Lee Quan Ninh, John Butcher, Benat Achiary, Roscoe Mitchel, Gunter Baby Sommer et Zina Parkins. She played with Fred Frith, Fritz Hauser and William Winant among others.

In fond of persian music, she studies tombak with Pedram Khavarzamini and tabla with Sankar Chowdhury as well as traditionnal music from midle est. With davul/tapan (turkish or bulgarian instrument) in Duna Orkestar (balkanic brass band) or tombak, daf and req with Koâni (trio with hurdy gurdy, harmonica and percussions) she played concerts in France, Switzerland, Germany and Turkey."

"Born in 1984, obviously self-taught, from the very beginning interested more in sound than in technique, his way to explore and to learn was to play with more and more musicians, everyone who accept actually!

So really soon improvisation took an important part in his work.

He met Michel Massot in Liège, and did a lot of workshop in Mulhouse (Festival Meteo) with people like Okkyung Lee, Chris Corsano, Mats Gustaffson, .. and all this, and also all the meetings are still feeding his sound experiences.

Tom is now very active in L'Oeil Kollectif in Liège, Ninglinspo, Nystagmus, Bobby de Nazareth, duo with Cecile Thévenot, duo with Phil Maggi and a lot of other bands..."

"Create, search, experiment, act; this is my way of practicing music. From baroque clarinets to modern clarinets, bass and double bass, to various wide-ranging techniques, I like to use my instrument as a tool for action, interaction with other artistic fields, places and audiences. Play in an abandoned motorway junction, a church or a country café, a school, a street, a gallery, an apartment, in Europe, in Turkey or in Haiti; it's exploring places, creating in-situ music, interacting with artists and multiple audiences.

In this dynamic, free improvisation (developed within the collective PILS, the trio Ratax and the duo Oxke Fixu ) allows me to react at the moment, take risks, confront me to the void, to the other and to me -even. I like to have a dialogue with the contemporary written music of composers such as Morton Feldman, Alberto Posadas, Helmut Lachenmann, Moondog or texts by poets like Tarkos, Beckett or Novarina. Improvisation is also important in the group of new Alsatian traditional music Wàldteïfel integrated in 2013 (Festival Summerlied 2014, prize of the Olca 2013). This project allows me to discover cultural roots and to promote a historical local heritage by proposing it to the public in a new form. To practice music in a group is essential, I like to offer colorful chamber music programs (Festival de Wissembourg 2014) or to join various ensembles ( Ensemble Volutes from 2012 to 2014, Ensemble K at Festival Musique Action 2014, participation at the Rencontres Musicales d'Accroche Notes 2012).

Strong of the teaching received, among others, from Ernesto Molinari (Master Performance in 2016), Armand Angster (DNSPM in 2014), Yves Sévère (DEM in 2011), and improvisers such as Jacques Demierre , Fred Frith, John Butcher, Joelle Leandre, Jacques Di Donato, Jean-Marc Foltz, Jean-Sebastien Marriage, I wish to transmit the pleasure of playing. It is with this in mind that I went to teach a month in Haiti and I took a pedagogical training at CEFEDEM Metz. I am currently a professor at the Lyre d'Orphée (Liège) and within the project El Sistema (school band) of Remua. This project allows me to transmit classical music to children who otherwise would not have access.

In 2015, returning from a Belgian tour with the trio Ratax and the Eye Kollectif , I gave my first improvised solo project, recorded the first album Wàldteïfel, gave a show and a workshop with the duo Oxke Fixu for the festival Tamperinging (Finland). My various projects have received project support from HEAR, the young talent grant from the city of Strasbourg and a grant from the Alsace region.

This year, I recorded with Fred Frith. In addition, I am in residence at the Arsenal of Metz for a colorful project around the Quartet for the end of Messiaen's time with Ensemble K and visual artist Jean-Christophe Roelens who will be born in November 2016. Clarinettiste within from the Eivia ensemble, it is in Berlin that we are going to create the Inéru opera next October. Currently, I participate in the concerts of the CNZ (Collegium Novum Zürich) performing with them works of Aperghis and Öcal."
