"Pianist Rodrigo Pinheiro (you know him mostly from his contributions to Red Trio) is one of the most requested presences of Portuguese improvisers in Poland, resulting in several co-operative groups with musicians from both countries. Wschod reunites him with the double bassist Zbigniew Kozera and the drummer Kuba Suchar to fulfill a purpose: to go beyond the established norms for the piano jazz trio.

And they indeed do it, breaking with the pyramidal hierarchization of that instrumental format by the redefinition of the solo and accompaniment roles and by unnusual approaches to rhythm, harmony and melody. And yes, the drumkit also act as a piano, the piano drums and the bass sometimes doesn't sound like a bass at all. The music is either subtle or energetic, exploring timbres and incorporating extensive techniques in a virtuosic playing always submited to the concretization of musical ideas.

All the musicians are on the top of their respective scenes, and this is music only possible when its actors are in full domain of their instruments and the process of improvisation. Pinheiro's skills joined him to the likes of Nate Wooley, John Butcher, Lotte Anker, Joe McPhee, Jason Stein and Axel Dorner. Kozera played with Peter Brotzmann, Alexander von Schlippenbach, John Edwards and Steve Noble. Suchar had Joshua Abrams, Noel Akchote, Rob Mazurek and Kazuhisa Uchihashi as partners. Artist Biographies

"Rodrigo Pinheiro was born in 1973 in Covilhã, a small town in the center of Portugal. He started learning the piano when he was five at the Conservatory of Covilhã and later at the Conservatory of Lisbon until he was eighteen. He soon got involved with the free Portuguese improvisation scene, having played with Américo Rodrigues, José Oliveira, Nuno Rebelo, Rodrigo Amado, Luís Desirat, Bruno Parrinha or Ernesto Rodrigues. Pinheiro's intuitive approach to improvisation and exploration of the piano timbres, using both classical and extensive techniques, makes his music energic, polyrhythmic and full of contrasts. Moreover, he has honed his technique at workshops of improvisa- tion and composition where he has played with virtuous names, such as Carlos Zíngaro, Peter Kowald, Gunther Muller or Patrick Brennan. He has also performed with several musicians, like Hiroshi Kobayashi, Cristin Wilboltz, Nathan Fuhr, Blaise Siwula, Per Anders Nilsson, John Zorn, Nobuyasu Furuya, Jason Stein, Nate Wooley, John Butcher, Lotte Anker, Joe McPhee, Keir Neuringer, among others. In 2010 Pinheiro formed his project RED Trio, with Hernâni Faustino (bass) and Gabriel Ferrandini (drums). The band has recorded four albums with Clean Feed and Nobusiness Records and performed live at jazz and improvised music festivals and concerts in Portugal, USA, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Poland and Romenia. He is also a member of the Nobuyasu Furuya Quintet, which has two released albums by Chitei Records e Nobusiness Records. Zbigniew Kozera is a double bassist active on the Polish improvised music scene, a member of groups Sundogs, Wschód, and LEM with Mateusz Rybicki & Samuel Hall.

Kuba Suchar is a Polish drummer and moog player known for the bands Mikrokolektyw, Robotobibok, Wschód, Za Siódmą and Górą. He is also a composer, producer, and a multi-media artist, and author of The Percussion Course. He is the founder and organizer of the Solo Festival at the Creative Arts Centre in Wroclaw, Poland.
